5.0 out of 5 stars True Texas Flavor
We discovered Hayes Carll's music on XM Radio's "X Country" channel--it was his song "Highway 87." Had to get the CD! This album will not disappoint. Carll is a Houston native who spent several years living at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar peninsula in Galveston County. Lifelong residents of SE TX ourselves, we have traveled Highway 87 numerous times on the way to ride...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great beginnings
I bought this to fill out my cataloge of Hayes music. I saw him live with Robert Earl Keen and I was drawn to his humor-very reminicent of Todd Snider. I found it to be much better music than I was expecting. Very enjoyable on its own merits. Live Frre or Die is awesome!

Carll is a Houston native who spent several years living at Crystal Beach on the Bolivar peninsula in Galveston County. Lifelong residents of SE TX ourselves, we have traveled Highway 87 numerous times on the way to ride the Galveston ferry. Every song on here is good. This is true, genuine Southeast Texas music flavor. Big things are ahead for Hayes Carll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great up and coming singer-songwriter, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Flowers & Liquor (Audio CD)
A little bit country, a little bit folk, a little bit rock'n'roll. If you're any bit familiar with the Texas singer-songwriter tradition, you'll find a fresh new voice in Hayes Carll. With hints of TownesVZ, Guy Clark, and Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hayes brings a youthful exhuberance while remaining matured beyond his years. In this CD you'll find a range of songs from introspective ballads to fun country rockers, all of them solid throughout. The sky's the limit with Hayes, and it all starts here.

Hayes Carll is a great new talent! His songs are unique, entertaining and thought-provoking. Hayes' lyrics will take you through a gamet of emotions about the serious side of life that he tempers liberally with his incredible sense of humor. I first heard him at Wunsche Bros. Cafe where he opened for Jimmy LaFave. I added his CD to my collection as have many of my friends. He is one of my favorite singer-songwriters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great new sound!, June 23, 2002

A perfect combination of old school rock 'n roll and bluegrass with a country twist. Perfect Lover rocks while Arkansas Blues slows down the pace with simple acoustics and a lonely voice. It's a Shame offers a great duet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poet with a Good voice, March 21, 2010
This review is from: Flowers & Liquor (Audio CD)
I think that this is Hayes' finest work, not a bad song on the whole CD, everything is very good. Some of my favorites are "Naked Checkers", a bluesy country ballad mix, "It's a Shame", fine lyrics and wonderful harmonies with Lisa Morales, "Richie Lee" a song about a childhood friend and "Easy Come Easy Go" a well written song that tells of two people's strife for hapiness. I could go on and on, because every song on "Flowers and Liquor" has great lyrics and beautiful haromonies.

This CD is out of production, so buy 2, like I did, it may not be available in the future and all that I say say about that is "IT'S A SHAME".

The best songwriter since Townes Van Zandt. Great voice, even better live but the CD is a gem of a debut.

Hayes Carll singing career started on Galveston Island and these songs represent living on the island. This cd is no longer in print and I had bought his second cd Little Rock before buying this and was happy to be able to put this one in my collection. Hayes is a great performer and guy, go see him play live if you ever get the chance.
