I love this book. The short stories are great reading specially while on vacation. This book has many little love stories that warm your heart. Clean, pure and romantically written. I read pretty much all of Rosamunde Pilcher's books and love her style of writting!

I love Rosamunde Pilcher and this is just another great read of many of her writings combined. The following stories were my favorites in this book:Flowers in the Rain-is all about loving and letting go of a dear old friend Mrs. Farquhar, who lived in the 'Big House,' and loved children. The Doll's House-was a great story about a brother who made his sister a dollhouse after his father had promised, but then passes away. Cousin Dorothy-was another of my favorite stories about learning to love a difficult person. Skates-another great story about two sisters, competing with one another. Each of the stories were great and is sure to delight a reader who needs a quick 'feel good,' read.

This book is full of the sweetest stories that make for a peaceful afternoon read. I've owned this book for years and chose it to give to a friend of mine who needed some light, but not frivolous reading. It really is a jewel.

Short and Sweet,
By J Davis (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flowers In The Rain: & Other Stories (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm not much of a short-story reader since I really enjoy getting buried deep in a very long novel, but I picked this book up to keep on my treadmill for reading in 20-30 minute intervals. It worked well for that purpose. I've enjoyed many of Pilcher's gentle romantic novels. I was expecting a similar read with these short stories, but found these to be almost too soft and sweet for my tastes. There are too many similar plots. The women often have low self-esteem and need to "find themselves". Every story has a fairy-tale ending. So they were okay for reading on the treadmill, but these aren't great short stories.

All of the stories in Flowers In The Rain & other Stories were memorable. The characters seem like real people and there is always something that happens that the reader can totally relate to in many different ways. The stories also have some surprise endings. There are sixteen short stories. All were memorable, but I have three favorites. They are Endings and Beginnings. A couple meet after a number of years have past and they have had very different lives, but they are able to totally connect like it was yesterday. In Whistle For The Wind, Jenny is a young woman who felt she was jilted because Fergus, the proverbial boy next door, became engaged while living in London. The fact that Fergus is six years her senior and had lived away from home for a number of years, made no differnce to Jenny. She had always thought he would marry her! In Cousin Dorothy, we have Mary Burn, a recent widow who had to deal with her difficult daughter, Vicky. The girl had been a sweet child, but losing her father at the age of 17 changed her into a person who is impossible to get along with. Mary who was never too fond of her husband's cousin Dorothy, decides to consult her for advice. Mary is amazed to find out how little she knows Dorothy and how helpful she could be. Each of the stories have something to offer and all gave me some things to think about and remember.
