Editorial Reviews

The long-awaited album by Deuter features the Japanese bamboo flute and shakuachi, which is a special flute used by the monks of the Fuke school in the practice of Suizen blowing meditation. Deuter embodies the essence of the shakuachi sound, which has a subtle, rich tone. Deuter plays these 11 compositions from a space of deep meditation where sound and silence meet. It is a true gift of high vibration.

I've been a fan of Deuter's spiritually uplifting and healing music for 25 years and have enjoyed the more joyous sounds of the 80's releases (Land of Enchantment is my fave but I also love Cicada, Nirvana Road, and Silence is the Answer) to the more mellow soundscapes of the New Earth Records releases since the mid-90s (of which Buddha Nature, Sea of Silence, Mystery of Light, and Atmospheres have been favorites.)

However, with the more introspective New Earth releases I find that, while all good, I wind up having to reprogram the tracks in a different order and/or edit out tracks to create an optimal flow to the CD program or to cull out a set of selected tracks that I find to be most conducive to meditation.

Not so with "Flowers of Silence!" I LOVE THIS CD just the way it is! The 11 tracks that range from 3 to 8 minutes flow perfectly together. The whole CD is expressively prayerful and suitable for meditation and is among my favorite Deuter releases.

"Flowers of Silence", features the Shakuhachi flute. 3 of the 11 tracks are shaku solos, a few have multi-layered shaku, a couple include oriental plucked strings (not sure what the instrument's name is--sorry), and one is a Nada Himalaya-like electronically processed bells. A few songs have very light synthesizer padding but, overall, there is way less use of keyboards on "Flowers of Silence" than on Deuter's releases of the past 15 years. The word "pure" comes to mind for whatever reason.

"Flowers of Silence" has rarely left my CD player for the past month and I find myself putting on the "repeat" button as this release creates great spiritually relaxing background ambience. It is great music to use with reiki, yoga, massage therapy, and other healing arts modalities.

In FLOWERS OF SILENCE, Deuter uses sparse instrumentation, either acoustically or electronically, of primarily kodo and shakuhachi to create a quiet, meditative space to live in and work in.
The titles fit the songs like a well made lid snugly fits on a box, and as one moves from track to track one discovers a thematic coherence that supports repeated listening.
FLOWERS OF SILENCE stands easily next to MUSIC FOR ZEN MEDITATION by Tony Scott. It's that good.
Nine bows, Deuter.

Deuter composes and plays the most beautiful music! It plays to the soul. I run a guided meditation group and our next journey is based on this cd. It is pure bliss. Do not hesitate to buy it. It's a treasure, as is Deuter.

I received this CD as a gift from a spiritual teacher in the wake of the death of Hope, my significant other who just recently died at 45. "It will help you," I was told. "Help you to sleep, help you to sort things out."

I fell asleep listening to it. The next day, I was at the Japanese Garden which our town is fortunate to have, and I met a man playing a Japanese flute---including one of these compositions. Amidst the purple orchids (her favorite color) I wept.

I can think of no better endorsement for this CD than the action of the universe. Delve into FLOWERS OF SILENCE. And share your experiences.

This is a profoundly relaxing cd for healing work. Amazing how Deuter just keeps getting better and better at creating music for healing.

I have several Deuter albums and just got this one. It takes you to another place, of calm. Nothing is overdone, the music does not sound "new age" to me, just flute and other instruments in combination of the pricise flute notes and the floating undertones. I relax best to instrumental music when the tunes are not recognizable, but also not just extended ambient sounds. This album is a definite flute album, with background accompaniment.
