Book Description

July 29, 2008
A flowing stream cuts its own channel. ---Major W. Ian Thomas, founder of Torchbearers International Over the past sixty years, Stuart Briscoe's life stream has cut a very deep channel. Thousands of sermons preached. Hundreds of thousands of airline miles flown. Seven continents visited. Thousands of church members added and eight churches planted. More than forty books authored. A lifetime of touching his audience with plainspoken, accessible Bible teaching. Now Briscoe looks back over his years to share his accumulated wisdom, with the point that every life matters---and everyone has a significant part to play in the grand cosmic flow of the Spirit. With a reputation built in the twentieth century, Stuart Briscoe has a fresh, vibrant message for twenty-first-century Christians. It is a vision of what one person can be and do, what God can call a single person to accomplish in his name. Flowing Streams is sage. It is poignant. It is Stuart Briscoe's legacy.

A flowing stream cuts its own channel. —Major W. Ian Thomas, founder of Torchbearers International

Over the past sixty years, Stuart Briscoe’s life stream has cut a very deep channel. Thousands of sermons preached. Hundreds of thousands of airline miles flown. Seven continents visited. Thousands of church members added and eight churches planted. More than forty books authored. A lifetime of touching his audience with plainspoken, accessible Bible teaching.

Now Briscoe looks back over his years to share his accumulated wisdom, with the point that every life matters—and everyone has a significant part to play in the grand cosmic flow of the Spirit. With a reputation built in the twentieth century, Stuart Briscoe has a fresh, vibrant message for twenty-first-century Christians. It is a vision of what one person can be and do, what God can call a single person to accomplish in his name.

Flowing Streams is sage. It is poignant. It is Stuart Briscoe’s legacy. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Stuart Briscoe was born in Millom, Cumbria, England in 1930, graduated from high school at the age of 17, and promptly embarked on a career in banking. He studied law, economics, and accounting in his spare time and eventually became personal assistant to the chief inspector of the bank. Also at the age of 17, he started to preach. For 12 years, preaching and his banking career kept him fully occupied.

During the Korean War he was drafted into the Royal Marines. In 1959, he and his wife, Jill, a school teacher, left the business world to share in the ministry of the Torchbearers--a youth organization reaching out to the far corners of the world. Stuart's travels took him all over the world, while Jill looked after their three children: David, Judy, and Peter.

In 1970, Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, U.S.A,. asked Stuart to become pastor. The church has since grown to a weekly attendance in excess of 7,000 and has planted 8 sister churches in the Milwaukee area. Elmbrook's TV and radio ministries, Telling the Truth, feature Stuart and Jill and are widely broadcast. Stuart's ministry is further extended by his extensive video and audio tapes and more then 40 books. After 30 years as senior pastor at Elmbrook Church, Stuart stepped down. He and Jill have assumed the roles of ministers-at-large on Elmbrook's church staff.

Various schools have honored him with honorary doctorates, and God has blessed Stuart and Jill with 13 grandchildren. He has preached in more than 100 countries and is invited to minister to pastors, missionaries, and church lay leaders on all continents.

In his spare time he likes to read, run, garden, and enjoy God's creation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lessons from a follower of God, November 11, 2009

This review is from: Flowing Streams: Journeys of a Life Well Lived (Paperback)
This book was a bit unusual for an auto biography. He does not try to highlight every achievement he made or elaborate on all his accomplishments. He simply tells his story. He tells how he has been used by God, and how often his accomplishments were not due to any amazing act on his part, but were due to his willingness to simply accept God's plan and go along with it. He talks about things that he did right and things that he did wrong, and gives advice on being a missionary, being a husband, and on being a preacher. But the focus is on being a servant of God, whatever that means in your life. There is no pressure for the reader to do all the things that Stuart Briscoe has done, most of which aren't even mentioned in the book. But there is a call to do what God wants you to do, and that in order to have a fulfilled life, you must pay attention to this call.

The book is light and easy to read. It does not get into any deep theology, making it very accessible. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and enlightening read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Changer, September 16, 2009
This review is from: Flowing Streams: Journeys of a Life Well Lived (Paperback)
I heard Mr. Briscoe speak at an event in 2008 and was astonished at his ability to deliver such a great message. I read this book, Flowing Streams, and was blown away. I began with the thinking that it was "just" his life story. It builds to such a climax that it was sad to be finished, and yet it has so impacted my life that I couldn't wait to purchase several copies and give to friends. Don't get in a hurry when you read this book, you need to savor every morsel and look at the underlying truths that are woven throughout its pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Rivers of Living Water, July 26, 2010

This review is from: Flowing Streams: Journeys of a Life Well Lived (Paperback)
For many years I have been nourished by the preaching ministry of Stuart Briscoe -- albeit from a distance. I had heard of Stuart as a young man, but it was when I shepherded a church about a hour north of Milwaukee that I began to do what I could to expose myself to his preaching ministry. Sometimes on vacation we would make the trek to Elmbrook just to have our souls watered from the river of living waters that would flow from his expositions of Scripture. While in my doctoral program I had a brief (half-day) exposure to Stuart's teaching ministry in a different setting. Again I came away with new hope, fresh courage, and renewed desire to put my hand to the plow of pastoral ministry once again. In more recent times I have filled my IPod with his sermons.

Thus I picked up Flowing Streams with some hopeful expectations. I was not disappointed. I found the same personality and wit I'd come to appreciate engaging me in the pages of the book. I found the same sane wisdom squeezed over the years from the Scriptures and the tests of ministry life. I found a humble, but honest assessment of a life lived in ministry. I found myself torn between looking for ways to free up time to get back to the book and yet not wanting to finish it too quickly.

If you are a pastor read this. If you know a pastor, read this and then share it with him. You'll both be encouraged.
