4.0 out of 5 stars MINI ZAP!!
The perfect size for small patios, balconies, or screened porches. Zapper has a lower grid voltage than most units at about 1,900 volts. (Larger zappers can have grid voltages of up to 5,000 volts.) This minimizes the loud "SNAP" sound of insects meeting their demise. If you have close neighbors who won't appreciate the noise of your new toy, this is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat.
I won't say it totally doesn't work, there are bugs that fly into this thing and make quick work of themself. I wish flies and mosquitoes came into it though, you only get like moths and that kinda thing flying into it. It zaps though, like REALLY zaps.

The perfect size for small patios, balconies, or screened porches. Zapper has a lower grid voltage than most units at about 1,900 volts. (Larger zappers can have grid voltages of up to 5,000 volts.) This minimizes the loud "SNAP" sound of insects meeting their demise. If you have close neighbors who won't appreciate the noise of your new toy, this is ideal.

The wire grids on the zapper are close enough to allow even the smallest gnats or mosquitos to be eliminated by the lower voltage. The unit also works very well on houseflies. Larger bugs, like big moths or "June bugs" seem to bounce right off, without getting zapped. You may have to clean dead insects out of the grids once in a while. A small brush will work.

The seven watt fluorescent tube is bright (blue colored when lit), but it won't compete with a 100 watt halogen yard floodlight. So, place the zapper in a dark area where bugs are drawn to it first. Also, note that at seven watts output, it draws very little electricity.

One concern: The wound grid design doesn't shed rain water like some of the larger units with vertical grids. It will sizzle and snap if the grids get wet. That is why I gave four stars instead of five. Keep it dry (hang under the eves, or in the screened porch) and it should be fine.

I've had this for over a year now--recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked great for several years! Yes, I'm buying them again!, April 26, 2008
This review is from: Flowtron BK-7 7-Watt, 1/4-Acre Insect Killer (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased two of these and had them for several years. They may look cheap, but they work just fine. I left them out all year round, through summer heat, rain, snow, freezing weather. I just unplugged them for the winter and left them hanging. The only maintenance they got was when I took an old toothbrush and cleaned the grid. They worked great, and gave me more than their money's worth of service. I am now buying three more, so I guess that's a pretty good review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bug zapper works, August 10, 2007
This review is from: Flowtron BK-7 7-Watt, 1/4-Acre Insect Killer (Lawn & Patio)
Used this small field outdoor electric bug killer inside our cabin which has faulty screens. Doubling as a night-light, it worked very well to kill mosquitoes and moths. Only problem was with shipping: one of the two sets arrived with a smashed bottom, which turned out not to affect its usage. The plastic material is not very sturdy. Both sets came with the tube bulbs out of the socket, which required screwdriver assisted dismantling to fix. Not a huge problem, but a surprise. Our old zapper did not open for bulb replacement, so this is an improvement on that score. However, the old one was sturdier and metal.

We purchased this product to use on our back deck. We have it hanging from the hanging bracket (which you can buy separately on Amazon). So far it's been working great and keeping the area around the deck mosquito-free.

Purchased two units, and one was DOA. Fast ship for unit replacement. Overall, these are not a good buy in my opinion. No bulb retainer is provided, even when the doc's show one. Power is too low to keep the electronic grid clean, and no access is provided to clean the grid. The grid itself seems poorly attached to the top of the unit.

1.0 out of 5 stars Continually arcing, October 5, 2008
This review is from: Flowtron BK-7 7-Watt, 1/4-Acre Insect Killer (Lawn & Patio)
Got the unit and installed it, it does seem to attract flies and such. However the wires on the electrified mesh are too close together so they are continually arcing. This seems to be a design flaw. It makes a lot of noise and interferes with the TV in the house Don't buy this one until they fix it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Never stops Buzzing!, August 27, 2008

The electric current constantly arcs across a separator on the electrical grid. So, the unit sounds like it is constantly killing insects but is only making noise. It kills some bugs but it appears the arcing noise/light scares the insects away as they are flying towards the light. Not recommended.
