Amazon.com Review

By attracting, vacuuming in, killing, and disposing of mosquitoes and other flying insects, this device makes it safe and comfortable to spend warm evenings outdoors. It's designed to be hung from a pole or bracket at a height of 6 to 8 feet above ground and works best situated 25 to 50 feet from where human activity takes place. It measures 15 inches high and 11 inches in diameter, weighs 8-3/4 pounds, and comes with a 22-foot power cord and a power pack that plugs into an outdoor outlet. It has a rugged, weatherproof polycarbonate housing that won't rust, crack, or fade and an outer shell to protect children, pets, birds, and wildlife. The device attracts insects by emitting diffused ultraviolet light with an 8-inch-diameter, 30-watt bulb that's effective over a 33,000-square-foot area. (The bulb has an average life of several years; but because the light is invisible to humans its effectiveness can't be monitored so it's best to change it seasonally.) In collaboration with the light, a fan produces an air-flow pattern to draw in mosquitoes and other small insects and kill them. An electrostatically charged grid, which has vertical rods so the fan expels insect debris and doesn't clog, kills large insects. Because the fan kills most insects, the device operates with minimum zapping noise. Included with the device is a 100-hour capsule of Octenol mosquito attractant that tapes to the outer shell and can be replaced with other capsules ordered separately. The device carries a two-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

1.0 out of 5 stars Hey, this (less expensive) machine is the same as that (more expensive) unit, NO!, June 27, 2002

I thought I could save a ton of cash going for this relatively inexpensive unit. A few friends had much more expensive units that use propane gas to creat CO2, but these unit seemed pretty promissing at a tiny fraction of the cost. Too good to be true? YES!

It just didn't work. Yes it operates properly, but no it really doesn't catch mosquitos. After 2 weeks with my unit I borrowed my friends (more expensive) machine and was blown away by how effective his was. This doesn't do what it reports to do. Buy a can of OFF or spend some real dough and get the real mccoy.

I think I have tried them all. Other brands with cross-hatched elements clog up and short out in a few days -- worthless. Other Flowtron units burn out in heavy thunderstorms, and Flowtron does not respond well to warranty claims (they want an exorbitant fee for a new bulb, even though the original bulb is perfectly good). I stumbled onto this model at a going-out-of-business sale. The (normal) fan noise, with occasional zaps, is much less intrusive than constant zapping of others. More importantly, it survives the weather and springtime swarms of midges, zillions of them, that used to pile up an inch thick even on other Flowtron units. Perhaps because the fan helps keep the elements clear, this has lasted through three years of continuous night-time use (it's connected to a photocell switch) until finally the fan started howling. Unfortunately, the warranty is only two years. But that's not unreasonable; I'm buying another.
