Flu: Alternative Treatments And Prevention (Proven Strategies To Protect Yourself And Your Family) by Randall Neustaedter is a little pocketbook offering a complete and thorough understanding of the influenza virus and how to avoid contracting it. As every winter provides reasonable outbreak of the flu, Flu offers readers an understanding of how influenza attacks the body and why it can be deadly, the truth of flu vaccines, effective alternative therapies, and how to prevent or manage the flu at home or with homeopathy, herbs and diet. Now that we are facing "Bird Flue", Randall Neustaedter's Flu is especially timely and highly recommended for all readers concerned with the health of themselves and their family for its comprehensive and complete coverage of exactly what is necessary to in the whole process of flue prevention and treatment.

I liked this book a lot - read it twice the first day! It has an easy to read style and a simple way of explaining scientific ideas - like differences in flu strains: H1, 2 or 3 joined to N1,2, or 3. It also describes how flu viruses work.
Remedies are clearly described and sections on treating children, seniors, and adults make differences in those patients' needs clear. I was pleased to see specific names and doses of remedies as well as stages for use. Many "natural health" guides withold that, or it is too vague to decide what to do once you are sick. You could decipher this book even if you had flu at the time - hopefully you won't wait that long to put up some of the remedies. I also think, for those doing family preparedness, that home-schooled kids would be mature enough to understand and use it. I would place the age at about 12 years old, for a bright child who wants to help out. The excerpt about Spanish Flu was disturbing, but probably meant to be. This is a killer bug, and bird flu is the same type, an H1N1 member.

We humans make vitamin D when our skin is exposed to enough sunlight. Most Americans have access to enough sunlight in the summer months to make healthy amounts of vitamin D. But, unfortunately -- except in the deep south -- most Americans do not make enough vitamin D in the fall and winter months. Since vitamin D is necessary to help prevent colds and flu, it should not be surprising that colds and flu commonly occur in the winter when most of us are deficient in vitamin D. But we don't have to be deficient in vitamin D in the fall and winter because this essential vitamin is readily available as a nutritional supplement. If everyone were to take 2,000 I.U. or more of vitamin D3 daily during the fall and winter months we would have a lot fewer colds and bouts of flu.Vitamin C also helps protect against colds and flu. Taking 2,000 mg or more of vitamin C daily plus vitamin D3 can significantly reduce your risk of ever getting a cold or flu again. |
