The Fluance FiSSDK500 is a iPod dock for the listener who is concerned with both sound quality and overall look of the unit. I am happy to say that the Fluance speaker accomplishes both tasks with ease. The Fluance FiSDK500 offers dual 5" Rubber Butyl speakers that provide smooth sound across the entire frequency range. While some of the other brands have a little more market recognition, few if any offer the combination of sound quality, looks, and value quite like the Fluance.

- My very first impression was very negative. However, after I let it "break-in" for an afternoon, I became impressed by its performance. I have never seen a speaker which had its performance so effected by a break-in period. The manufacture recommends breaking in the speaker for period of 10 hours while playing at a medium volume. I highly recommend that you do this otherwise you will not be maximizing your speaker's performance.

- The speaker is larger than I expected - it weighs a little over 15 pounds. Also, the speaker is not really portable due to the size and its inability to accept batteries.

-The volume indicator can not be turned off nor can it be dimmed.

- The integrated amplifier offers 20 watts RMS of power.

- The speaker comes with a real thin plastic coating that helps protect the surface. It should be removed so that you can enjoy the speaker's glossy finish.

- The Fluance FiSDK500 comes with RCA and S-Video inputs, and an adapter that allows an headphone input to plug into RCAs. In a perfect world it would have offer an optical input and a sub-woofer output.

- Sound performance is very good - it offers smooth performance.

Read about this one on an audiophile blog. Had a great deal on it, so I decided to put the cash down.
I'll preface this by saying while I don't consider myself a die-hard audiophile, I do appreciate good acoustics while listening to my music, and will pay a reasonable sum for it.

About use: using at my work office, sitting about a foot from me. Using 5th generation iPod, playing songs encoded mainly in Apple Lossless. Music played is varied across the music divide (straight rock, hard rock, electronica, Brazilian Jazz, and so on)

Appearance: Beautiful appearance: piano black gloss finish, with a minimalist display. Basically, what you see in the pictures on Amazon is what you get (dancing girl excluded, of course). This is a heavy unit by iPod speaker standards (10lbs, 15lbs shipped), so don't plan to move it too much.

Sound: Unlike your $30-60 iPod speakers you get from your retail store, these speakers give a full, rich sound to music that can sound "flat" with those cheap speakers. This is probably from not only good speakers, but a real wood cabinet it is enclosed in. Fluance does recommend a 10 hour break-in, but I got pretty good sound within 5 hours. How you encode the music (mp3 256kps vs 128kps vs lossless) can help the sound some. If you are looking for something for blasting hip hop with loud bass, you may want to look into another product. You can adjust the treble and bass, and it is reasonably good, but don't expect megabass booms.

Interface: Pretty simple. Out of the box, did not know how to navigate the iPod menu with the remote, but the simple instructions clarified it. Comes with 6 cradle adaptors to fit in interface, so 5th gen iPod works well. And the cradle does charge.

I bought and returned the FiSDK500 after only a couple of days and after their "break-in period" had been completed. The sound does improve over time and it does perform better than most other speaker docks and probably better than everything in its price range including a couple of Bose Sounddocks. The sound is generally good but I found the bass to be boomy and the mids were lacking presence. To be fair though, you would have to spend hundreds more to do better than this product. If this is meant to be your only sound source, I would recommend auditioning a Fat Man tube dock or if you want a portable, the NAD Viso. Both are much more money but if sound is important, they are worth a listen.

On the looks side of things, you will either love it or hate it; it is plain/modern. It is also large so study the measurements to see if it will fit on your counter, bookcase, or dresser.

Stylish looks coupled with awesome sound. Makes those Bose iPod systems that cost 2x as much as this model very weak by comparison. You'll love the individual bass and treble controls that other companies don't think we need. Also has two rear ports so bass is nice but can get a little boomy if placed too close to wall.

This baby is solid! I did research and the Fluance FISDK500 was rated well, and with a reasonable price tag. If you want boom-boom bass, this may not be for you. But if you want a balanced, rich sound...this is it.

What a fantastic dock for my iPod touch! The manufacturer recommends a 10-day break in period and they were right. There is just so much rich sound from this dock, and I've owned JBL and Bose systems....I'm speechless. It is THE best out there for its price.
