3.0 out of 5 stars Yes Meets The Munchkins, October 5, 2009

This review is from: Fluid Druid (Audio CD)
I burned this from the original vinyl album, scratches and pops and all. When I first put it on the USB turntable to begin the burning process, I heard a few notes and left the room. My wife asked what in the world I was recording and it annoyed her to no end. I went back in to check on it and I noticed the vocals sounded like the singer had just breathed helium. I'd inadvertently hit the 45rpm button. I trashed the take and started over again at 33 1/2rpm. Unfortunately, it didn't change that munchkin singer voice very much.

The musical style sounded so much like Yes, that I think if Jon Anderson's voice was dubbed in, it could pass for them. From the drumming down to the bass player, it is really close. That being said, the music is not bad at all. It's just nothing that blows me away. These guys were obviously proficient at their instruments.

On the other hand, the vocalist with that high-pitched, almost falsetto voice got old pretty fast. I was thinking the munchkins from the Wizard Of Oz the whole time.

Once I got over the vocalist, I concentrated on the songs. Some of them are okay, some, as in FM 145, not very good. However, none of them stand out as memorable. The only thing about the album I can remember is the opening phrases of Razor Promise.

If you are a Yes fan then maybe these guys will be for you. Then again, if you are a Yes fan, you may hate these guys for imitating your favorite band. If you are a big fan of vocalists, I have a feeling this album isn't going to rock your boat.

As for me, I'm glad to have listened to it again after it had languished for so many years in my album collection. Now it can gather dust on my new CD shelf.
