5.0 out of 5 stars it held the horn/outlet really hard, May 21, 2009

I installed it on the toilet outlet to check it's hold and since the area was wax free and it held hard. I tried to remove it to follow the directions but it held so tough I said it would be easier to just put the large o-ring (for me) since my copper/metal flange was kind of cupped and drop the toilet and all in as a unit. This toilet has bugged me and eaten about 6 wax rings since the tile job because the toilet rocks. Now it's flush with no rocking and no possibility of the dreaded wax ring side leak. Very happy even though it hasn't been in long. It makes so much more common sense than a wax ring ever did. I also had the fernco and was going to try it but it wouldn't fit in my pipe. My pipe was 3". I cleaned my toilet outlet with brake cleaner (cuts the wax good but a little stinky) and then purple power both with brass wire brushes. turned to toilet upside down in the shower to rinse the soapy residue haha. Why did I do that? 1. Common sense and 2. Thought it would work and surprise it did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not fit all toilets; check before buying., November 20, 2008

Neither the manufacturer nor any online plumbing forum I've seen cautions that these products do not fit on all toilets. I bought three of them and only discovered that I couldn't use them after I'd tried to install them and couldn't. I ended up using wax rings after all.

My old toilets from the early 1950s are actually too well designed to use this kind of product. The horn on the bottom of my toilets where this would mount actually extends down past the floor and fits close inside the top of the 4" closet flange. It's a great design that minimizes leaks better than modern toilets, but there's no room for this wax-free seal between the horn and the flange. I discovered the hard way that these things evidently are designed for newer toilets only, whose horns (1) don't extend down past the floor into the flange, and/or (2) are considerably less than 4" in diameter.

If you're planning to use this on an old toilet, you'd better pull the toilet first and make sure this will fit. It's inconvenient, but I'd have saved a bunch of time and money if I'd known to do it.

I don't like giving a mediocre rating to a product that may very well be great, but the manufacturer should do a better job of warning that you may not be able to use it. That obviously matters most when you're ordering online, and returning an unusable product is such a hassle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Say good bye to wax seals, March 21, 2011

This is an excellent product and is easy to install as well as versatile. I originally purchased the Fernco FTS-4 and found that it does not work on 4" cast iron pipe with a 3.75" I.D. even though Fernco states it will work on cast iron pipe. When I spoke to the Fernco Tech Support, they said it will only fit pipes with an I.D. between 3.96"-4.02". I was not totally impressed with the adhesive on the Fernco either as it is questionable on how it will hold up in the long run. Aternatively, I then purchased the Fluidmaster 7504 and am very confident this will perform to specs. If you know the size of your pipe, I would recommend getting the dedicated size. The 7504 is for 4" pipe and the 7503 is for 3" pipe. The 7500 is adaptable to 3" and 4". I personally prefer the dedicated 7504 as it has a larger opening with only one sleeve. The 7500 has two sleeves which lock into each other and an additional o-ring is used. Because of the two sleeves, this reduces the opening. With the 7504 or the 7503, less is better as there are fewer parts to fail and the openings are larger. I installed the neoprene gasket to the toilet horn first and then lowered the toilet with the sleeve down into the floor collar. This procedure is better than the instructions state because you can push the gasket all the way on the horn and secure it firmly for a secure tight fit. Two o-rings come with the unit, a thick one and a thin one. I used the thicker o-ring on the sleeve which compresses as it slides down the collar for a nice tight fit. No chance for leaks or fumes. The Fluidmaster also comes with all corrosion resistant brass mounting bolts, brass washers and brass nuts which is a nice touch compared to the Fernco product which doesn't come with any hardware. Definitely makes wax seals obsolete. The Fluidmaster is reusable if the toilet needs to be pulled. It can also be switched over to another toilet if you are replacing your toilet. Try that with a wax ring! No messy wax to scrape off either. Fluidmaster 7504 Wax Free Bowl Gasket for 4 inch Drain Pipe by Fluidmaster, IncFluidmaster 7500P8 Wax-Free Bowl Gasket
