5.0 out of 5 stars Can't add much to what has already been said, April 10, 2009

This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I originally bought the Extech EX330 which I was attracted to because it has a thermocouple and a lot lower price. However, I got a defective unit and realized why it was so much less expensive, At that point I decided to make the investment in a meter that I hope will last me many years. It was a lot more expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Regarding the comment that it is not the quality of older Fluke meters, I probably should have bought a Fluke and saved going through a series of meters that last a hand-full of years and then hit the trash can. Comparing it to my old meters, it seems to be a very well-built instrument.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice product with a few CONS, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
PROS:

1. Fluke's famous quality, durability and accuracy.

2. Fluke finally made the battery replacement easy. The 9 Volt battery compartment is under the stand's flap fastened with only one small screw.

CONS:

1. The new holster is skimpy - it leaves part of the front panel and the knob exposed and prone to damage, should the meter fall. The old Fluke holsters used to be more bulletproof.

2. Made in CHlNA. Fluke stuff used to be made in USA only. Why everything on US market has to be made in CHlNA now? Not good.

3. The biggest CON for me is the display's much lower contrast than it used to be in old Fluke meters (like Fluke model 12). The background is really dark and it makes it hard to see the digits. OK, the new meters have backlight but who will use it constantly and waste the battery?

I threw the manual booklet away and downloaded it in PDF file from Fluke's support website.

Overall: nice product. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Replacement for my Fluke 12, November 17, 2008
By
This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
My trusty Model 12 took a drop that blew a chunk out of its case. My employer bought me a 117 to replace it. Sweet. 0.1 Mv resolution, freq up to 9999HZ, back lighting, non contact voltage scanning, ect.

I like this meter. The old twelve is now patched up with some epoxy putty and in the trunk of my car. You can not go wrong with a Fluke.

This Fluke Multimeter was a wonderful purchase. I couldn't be happier. I bought it so I could bias tube amplifiers, but I find myself using it for other projects as well.

It is accurate, the screen has a switchable backlight and is easy to read, and I'm sure there are functions that I haven't even attempted to use. This is a great value for a multimeter made by one of the leaders in electronics testing equipment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect multimeter, January 11, 2009
This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I like this meter a lot. It is accurate and works as advertised. There is however room for improvement.

The display's background is way too dark, almost as dark as the color of the case, making it really hard to read without the backlight on. Even cheap multimeters have much better visible displays.

And I wish it were still US-made like the old Fluke meters used to be. This one is made in a very large foreign country very famous for cheap labor. Make a guess, any guess.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck meter out there!, August 30, 2010
This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
Super accurate with tons of features. I love the auto AC/DC, backlight, no-touch current checker, and Min-Max feature. It's more compact than older models and the few extra $ is more than worth it for the added features than the other models in the line such as the 113, 115, and 116. I use this meter both professionally and at home and it's never left me wanting something it can't do.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple, June 29, 2009

I like the other reviewers have owned many multimeters but have finally settled on fluke. I used fluke equipment in electronics school and now work in industry that demands using equipment in inclement weather. The fluke has held up great and the auto detection of DC and AC has simplified the work when switching between different circuits. I have also used this meter on weekends when working on old cars and it has worked great for troubleshooting and rewiring vintage metal.

I bought the Fluke 117 Multimeter as a replacement for my old and very tired Fluke 77 Multimeter. This is a great meter for the price, I love all the new features Fluke has put in. If I have any gripe it's that the leads don't stow on the back like the model 77. If you need a quality Multimeter at a decent price grab one of these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Meter at a competitive price!, June 27, 2011
This review is from: Fluke 117 Electricians True RMS Multimeter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've been an electronics geek for 30+ years, and "making due" with a $3 H****r F*****t meter. Scored a Fluke 117 recently, and I'm kicking myself for not upgrading a long time ago. Yeah, the $3 meter does most the same stuff. But the Fluke just reeks of quality. It doesn't just do the job, it feels good using it to do the job! And there are features you don't get on common cheap meters: a frequency counter on the voltage and current scales, the analog bar graph, capacitance measurement, and the "live wire" testing. I am confused as to how this works! If there is current flowing, it's easy enough to check for, but this thing can be held merely "close" to a live wire, and detect it! Like point it within 8 inches of the lamp on my desk while it is turned OFF and it can tell it's hot! Neat trick. Hoping I can rig up an inductive pickup to use with the frequency counter to use as a tachometer for automotive work.

It's much like Snap-On tools. Yeah, Craftsman will loosen your bolts most the time (and they're warrantied for the all too common failure.) But the Snap-On just *feels* good doing it. Fluke is to meters like Snap-On is to wrenches :)
