Kinda Not Great,
By Cavity Search (Southern California) - See all my reviews However, Fluke makes pretty lousy voltage detectors. I own the full size one, and this one, and when I need to check for a live circuit to actually work on, I go for another make. What I like about the LVD-1 is the light, and the fact that I can do quick and casual checks on circuits. I gave it four stars because it's small, fairly accurate, uses normal batteries, and has a very handy light. As a plain old flashlight, it's an outstanding product. I've had tiny LED lights before, and nearly all of them use watch batteries which are difficult or impossible to replace. I've never been a fan of throw away tools, especially ones with chemicals and metals that are bad for the environment. With this, throw in a AAA battery, which you can find anywhere, and your back in business. I've own and regularly used this light for about five years, and I've only replaced the battery once. This fact alone means it's paid for itself several times over. The voltage detector is an added bonus. I don't always do electrical work, but I've become the layman's guru for all things geek, and for the past year I've been working in maintenance for an old, beat up industrial type building. Doing quick checks on circuits is common, and most of the time I'd have to run to my office to get tools, except I can just whip this guy out and see if there's power. It's saved me a lot of running around, and looks darn impressive to the uninformed. heh The small size means I can carry it around without having a load of junk in my pocket. I've used it to find stuff in the glove box, find my way in movie theaters, and eyeballing endless dark nooks and crannies. The button is small, rubber, and does NOT get pushed accidently. Or if it does, the battery lasts even long than I thought. It has a nice, fairly bright white light. This is good enough to see the colors of wires your working on, including tough-to-see telecom wires. It's not going to blind anybody or direct 747's on the runway, but usually it'll do the job. The clip comes in handy when you need a third hand to hold a flashlight. The only drawback is the way the voltage detector operates. First, it doesn't have a low battery warning. When the battery starts to go, you still get plenty of light from the flashlight part, but the detector itself doesn't give accurate results, which could be a Bad Thing if you indend to start fussing with circuits you don't expect to be live. Always check a known live circuit! Second, it's got a light to indicate voltage, but no audio. Third, the dual Blue Red thing is more annoying than anything. Sometimes it shows blue, which shows your close, but presumably not at, the source of the voltage. Red shows you are at the source. I don't need all that. All I want to know is whether or not I'm going to die if I stick my hand around in the area. This is a handy little item, but that's it. I'd never recommend it as one's sole voltage detector. Even Fluke has this item under "Accessories", not tools. As an Accessory, however, it's worth every penny. No electrician, and few laymen, should be without it. It's simply too handy to do without. I am a commercial electrician w/ a Master License in Virginia, and I have used the LVD1 and the LVD2 and all I can say is that Fluke makes the best non-contact testers. I really like the flashlight/tester combo. I see turning the light and tester at the same time as a safety feature - if the light turns on it means the battery is good.
I have used the cheapo testers at the local hardware store and have found them too unreliable. I prefer the LVD1 (or LVD2) out in the field.

This is a great product. The size is small enough to fit in your pocket. The light lets you know that its on. The 1 AAA battery lasts a long time. The LED light is bright and lasts a very long time. The volt detector works great with its 2 color, blue as you start to get close and turns red at the source. It's the first test. If there is no power to the unit, no need to look further. Great to tell if the extension cord has power or the GFI has tripped. The light is great when the power goes out. I was in a building that had no windows when the power went out and I found the exit with the light. I liked it so much I just bought another.
