4.0 out of 5 stars A very useful kit, April 15, 2004

This review is from: Fluke Networks LINKRUNNER-KIT 100Mbps Network Link Testing Device (Electronics)
If you're looking at this review then you probably already know what this kit is for, so I'll skip to the important part - is it worth the money? In my opinion, yes. If you don't want to spend thousands of dollars on one of those "overkill" cable testers, then this is the kit for you. I've installed thousands of feet of cable, done more terminations and troubleshooting than I care to remember, and this kit has been rock solid reliable every step of the way. (Let's face it, Fluke makes great equipment.) It tones, it tests, it maps, it determines cable length. It will grab an IP address from a DHCP server and allow you to see what type of information the DHCP server is kicking out - default gateway, subnet mask, etc. It has a built in ping feature which allows the user to ping the default gateway and other DHCP-discovered hosts. It's even got a backlit display. I'm not going to waste space by listing the contents of the kit, but I will say that it comes with a ton of useful stuff all packaged in a nice carrying case. This is a great kit for the "one man army" - it'll cut down on installation/testing/troubleshooting time for sure. The only reason I didn't give this kit a five star rating is because there is no way to enter the NVP for the type of cable you're attempting to measure. I did some measurement tests against a MicroTest Microscanner (which allows the user to adjust the NVP value) and the Linkrunner cable length test results were in the same ballpark, so no huge deal. If you don't have much money to spend initially then consider getting just the Linkrunner and then purchase the accessories that make up the kit separately as the dollars start to roll in.
