Book Description

January 2002
Fluoridation of water has been used for the prevention of tooth decay for over fifty years. During this time little research has been done to ascertain whether it works. The chemicals used are classified as toxic industrial waste, yet no study has ever been conducted into their safety for human consumption. At the same time, research has uncovered serious side effects including deaths, cancer, skeletal fluorosis, osteoporosis, dementia, lowered IQ, kidney damage and even increased dental decay. Strongly opposed throughout the world, water fluoridation is far less widely accepted than its proponents would have us believe. Only two percent of the people of Western Europe have their water fluoridated - almost all of them within Britain and Ireland. Despite all this, the dental organizations lobby governments to compel everyone to ingest fluoride, whether they want it or not and without regard to possible harm. The vast majority of dentists maintain that fluoride is not debatable. However Barry Groves has assembled evidence to refute every single argument made by the dental establishment in favour of fluoridation. His book is particularly timely as the issue of fluoridation enters the political area once again in both Britain and Ireland. The debate will be vigorous and this book will be at its centre.

More About the Author

Barry Groves, who lives with his wife, Monica, in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, can rightfully claim to be Britain's leading exponent of the low-carbohydrate, high-fat way of life as he has lived on, researched, lectured and written about it for 47 years.

He and Monica were overweight from 1957 to 1962, when he discovered the low-carb, high-fat regime for weight loss. It worked. This started his questioning conventional diets and, in 1982, he took up a full-time research into the relationship between diet and 'diseases of civilization' such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. As a result of his researches, he realised that the perceived wisdoms, both of low-calorie dieting for weight loss and 'healthy eating' for the control of heart disease, were seriously flawed.

Barry's first manuscript was for Diet and be Damned, a book about his findings and why diseases such as obesity and diabetes had increased since 'healthy eating' was introduced in 1984. A major publishing house was interested but said that it was too important a work to publish by an unknown author. They advised Barry to write a diet book to become known. This resulted in The Calorie Fallacy which was published in 1994. The Calorie Fallacy was difficult to advertise as magazines refused to take ads for a regime that was contrary to perceived wisdom. Despite this it sold well enough to interest a major international publisher. This resulted in the publication of Barry's best-selling book, Eat Fat, Get Thin!, in 2000. The next year, Fluoride: Drinking ourselves to death?, based on six years' research, was published.

In 2002 he won the prestigious Sophie Coe Prize at the Oxford Symposium on Food History and was awarded a doctorate in nutritional science for his fluoride work.

Barry then spent so much time helping people who were having difficulty with another well-known low-carb diet, that it was 2007 before Natural Health & Weight Loss was published. This was followed in 2008 by his original work, much expanded and brought up-to-date, now called Trick and Treat: How 'healthy eating' is making us ill.

Barry has been published in countries as far apart as Argentina and Russia, as well as all English-speaking countries.

Barry is a director of the Foundation for Thymic Cancer Research, (www.thymic.org), an honorary board member of the Weston A. Price Foundation (www.westonaprice.org), a founder member of The International Network of Cholesterol Sceptics (www.thincs.org), and a founder member of the Fluoride Action Network (www.fluoridealert.org). He also maintains three internationally respected health information websites.

Barry does not confine himself to medical and dietary research. With a long-term interest in energy conservation, he and Monica designed and built their own solar-heated house over three years from 1977 to 1980.

For relaxation, in 1982, Barry took up archery. He was a British Champion every year from 1987 to 2008 taking over 20 British Records in Target, Clout and Flight archery. He is also a six times World Champion with five World Records.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the pro-fluoridationists, April 7, 2002
This review is from: Fluoride: Drinking Ourselves to Death? (Paperback)
Barry Grove's book, Fluoride: Drinking Ourselves to Death, exposes the "science" that has successfully promoted water fluoridation for what it is: bluff, propaganda, and lies. Fluoride is a poison--more poisonous than lead, slightly less poisonous than arsenic. It is cumulative and collects in bones and tissues, not just the teeth. Numerous studies done on animals point out the obvious dangers. Other studies have shown increased rates of cancer, osteoporosis, and other diseases. Dr. Albert Schatz, who discovered the antibiotic streptomycin, said in 1982 that "fluoridation is the greatest fraud that has ever been perpetrated." Yet other studies of tens of thousands of children show that it isn't even effective at preventing cavities and is an extremely poor delivery system even if it were effective.

Like it or not, your government sometimes lies to you. Groves points out the fact that fluoridation is nothing more or less than a huge government-sponsored lie, conveniently spun so that the super-phosphate industry can rid itself of harmful toxic waste that is illegal and dangerous to release into the air but suddenly becomes a magical "elixir of good teeth" when added to our drinking water.

If you care about your health, Grove's book is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Overview Of Research On Fluoride & It's Hazards, October 4, 2003

This review is from: Fluoride: Drinking Ourselves to Death? (Paperback)
This book reviews the science and salesmanship involved in the fluoride debate, as there is no clear valid evidence of significant benefits from added fluoride consumption, while there are many independent studies showing a variety of potential negative mental & physical effects. This evidence has been available previously in some other texts and online information collections, and is beyond rational refutation. There are, of course, some really insecure people who just can't accept or admit that the government, medical, & dental authorities are spreading lies and contaminating the public water supplies. One reviewer claims that people who denounce fluoridation are opportunists seeking economic profit and getting paid thousands of dollars per event for speaking against fluoridation. To deny one conspiracy, this reviewer has invented his own conspiracy, based on no evidence. If speaking publicly against fluoride were financially lucrative, where are all the wealthy fluoride opponents and anti-fluoride ads? Of course, all the damning evidence about fluoride is in professional journals and government documents for anyone to see. Then again, maybe consuming so much fluoride made that person dumb enough to think fluoride is good and anyone against fluoride isn't - after all, fluoridation has been correlated with diminished IQs.

This book is outstanding! It documents false claims by fluoride pushers and provides unimpeachable evidence that fluoridation is public health quackery!
