4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to play the pieces
There weren't that many pieces to play, but they were fun. I never knew so much about the history of flutes. The CD was a lot of fun too. My favorite and best piece is "The Entertainer". he book has improved my knowledge of the flute a lot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but disappointing
It is hard not to like a book intended to collect together lots of historical and useful information about any music instrument. This book's layouts are colorful, the format (deluxe spiral binding, full color, etc.) is attractive, but the authors seem (from my point of view) to have run out of material halfway through. Much of the second half of this book is given over...

This is an excellent book for all ages covering the flute history to the fullest. Includes a play-along CD. Well illustrated. in my honest opinion this book is a MUST for every flute player and their parent.

It is hard not to like a book intended to collect together lots of historical and useful information about any music instrument. This book's layouts are colorful, the format (deluxe spiral binding, full color, etc.) is attractive, but the authors seem (from my point of view) to have run out of material halfway through. Much of the second half of this book is given over to helping young flute players get through the psychologically daunting task of preparing for regional examination and competitions. It is not the book I expected it to be from reading others' reviews; as an adult beginner expecting to play flute for recreation, I found, in this book, little help or guidance on actually playing the transverse flute. I have to wonder why so many skilled musicians seem unable to appreciate the situation of the learner on an instrument. The authors of this book seem to be rather uninterested in that aspect of flute playing.
