5.0 out of 5 stars Flute Fantasies, September 30, 2000
By
Stephen O'Donnell (Scone, Perthshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Flute Fantaisie (Audio CD)
Hello

If you're wanting to know the content of this CD then I'll go straight ahead. Grovlez, Gaubert, Enesco, Sancan, Taffanel, Busser, Ganne, and the most spectacular: Faure. My favourite piece on this Digital CD would have to be Fantasie by Faure as I frequently play it myself. This collection of marvelous French flute pieces is spectacular and I thourgly enjoy listening to it

Susan Milan has the most amazing soft playing, but can also be very strong. Her vibrato is the most immense I've ever heard. And Ian Brown, well where do I start? The guy's a genius. The way he ticles the keys giving off a smooth and delicate sound, always in time.

This is a definite 5 star rating

It's a wonderful CD to listen to whist going to sleep which slowly sends you off into an amazing dream, hence the name "Fantasie"

I thorouly recomend it, Stephen O'Donnell

3.0 out of 5 stars vibrato overkill!, April 22, 2005
By
This review is from: Flute Fantaisie (Audio CD)
While I agree that Susan Milan has an incredible sound, her vibrato completely overshadows it. I've played many of the pieces on this CD. The French composers are great. One reviewer called her vibrato "immense". That is not a good thing. Her vibrato never varies. It's always the same. Variations of vibrato are a must for any flute player. Different types of music call for different types of vibrato to be used. I'm sorry to disagree with the 5 stars, but I couldn't get past that. Overall, it was really quite annoying.

She has a marvelous dark sound with a intense core that you can only get with a gold flute. Her vibrato is just fine, her performance flawless. After living with a symphonic flutist for 50 years I know fine playing when I hear it and it just doesn't get any better than this.
