This is a lovely jazz set. Buddy Collette and Herbie Mann can always be counted on to provide listenable riffs. The two flutes compliment each other well and Collette's alto, tenor, and clarinet work speak to his soaring versatility and provide a creative groove. Mann's piccolo on Give a Little Whistle is a good touch. As usual Jimmy Rowles viruoso piano and celeste add goodies to the mix. Mel Lewis, as is his norm, is solid. Always solid. Buddy Clark handles the bass work and keeps everyone between the lines. The arrangements are clean and if you like head-bobbing hummable riffs then give this set a listen. No cacaphony here. I recommend it highly.
Are you kidding me. These two virtuoso's playing together is a God sent. They are both in top form, as is the rest of their band. If you enjoy the 50's style west coast, small combo jazz, it will not get better than this. I get so excited every time I listen to my album that I just ordered the cd in case my album warps or gets scratched. Listen and enjoy.
