This book, an alphabetical listing of flute music by women composers, provides ready access to flute music that is published or available in manuscript form. It contains works for solo flute, duets, flute and piano, concertos, woodwind quintets, other chamber ensembles, or any work that employs soloistic use of the flute. It also provides biographical information on the composers, publishers, availability of works, and annotations on the works themselves. All compositions are indexed by title and by instrumentation, and publishers and contemporary composers are listed with current addresses, to facilitate the ordering of music. The first published volume of its kind, this unusual work will draw attention to valuable and unknown repertoire in this genre and provide the opportunity for women's works to be heard more often. I used this book as one of my sources for a performance-related research project that I've been doing on this topic this summer. As it is the only book I've been able to find on this particular topic, I found it to be helpful in helping me get started and giving me an idea on what was actually available to me as a performer. The author was very thorough with her information, and the composers' comments were helpful. However, since it was published in 1988, a LOT of really great compositions, and more recent composers, are missing. Does anyone know if a more recent edition is going to be written?

I ordered this book as a gift for my daughter, who is an enthusiastic young flute student. (I even paid 10 bucks expedited shipping to get it here for Christmas, but that's my fault for waiting until the last minute). I wanted a book that would inspire her love of the instrument, and particularly appeal to her as a young woman aspiring artist. This book is simply an alphabetical listing of composers with some summary biographical info. It is 9" x 6" in size and is bound in ordinary laminated cardboard. $87? Are you kidding me? I inferred too much from the price. This is a library reference book for someone doing research, at best. Not something that many people would want to own. I'm returning mine (now I have to figure out some other gift.)
