5.0 out of 5 stars Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute
This is the first book on NAF (Native American Flute) making that I've purchased after years of building them. I got the book because my flutes are all made of clay and I needed insight into working with wood and basic flute theory in general. The book opened my eyes to some fine tuning tricks I'd missed, and other flute designs and construction options available. Russ...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up To Its Reviews
Sadly, I returned this item when it did not live up to the expectations you get from its reviews. I got a few pages in and found vague instructions like, (paraphrasing) 'the length of the head end of the flute can vary according to the flute you are making...' That was it for me. What is the formula, any recommendations, where can you find that information? Books with...

This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
Russ does a fine job of explaining basics to the novice and gives complete construction details to increase the chances for a successful project. His resources list in the appendix is useful for anyone seeking further knowledge on the subject. This book is a well written and easy to follow guide--buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flute making process is well explained, July 27, 2008
By
This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
The Flute Shop is an excellent choice for those who want to delve into making Native American style flutes. I have made a few rather successful flutes in the past couple years from instructions by another flute maker, but this book came highly recommended and I wanted to see what I could do to improve my flutes.

This book very clearly explained the intricacies of making a flute and I think will help me improve the sound of my flutes even more. This is a basic flute making book and will not give measurements for more than a few flutes, but it explains various styles and techniques very well.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
This is a must have manual in your Native American (type) flute workshop.
Loaded with illustrations and how-to information.
The Native American Flute does not work like flutes from any other country, this manual will help you understand the concept of construction, and will provide information on how to craft your own flute.

I found this book to be an excellent book in the manner in which it was written and presented. Having made flutes for many years, using traditional methods for making flutes, when I saw this book, I purchased it to see how it compared to oral methods that had been given to me to use in making and tuning flutes. It was excellent to see much of this information now written down and put forth in a book that allows others to make this fantastic instrument that comes from our people, the Native North American Peoples. Excellent job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making a NAF (native american flute), January 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
I thought this book was excellent. Very worth the price. Lots of very detailed drawings, and well written paragraphs describing how to make a number of different native american flutes. This book is for someone who is familiar with power tools and/or woodcarving. Because I'm not an expert (this was my first attempt at a NAF) I thought some of the material in the appendix would have been helpful in the main body of the book--for example: materials, tools, methods, and the layouts for the different size bores. The resources section (books, software, websites, videos, and misc retail sources was wonderful. It was shipped quickly and was very well packaged.

5.0 out of 5 stars rookie flute maker, December 30, 2009

This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
I got this book based on the recommendation of a world class flute maker. I was not disappointed. Good detail, referencss, basic instructions, finger charts and tuning charts. Everything one needs to build their first flute. I've since created 5 flutes. That's not to say there hasn't been some trial and error. The book even covers how to repair some mistakes. I have now created my own way to build flutes. I am very pleased with the book. My next project will be a drone flute.

Well written and informative manual. After reading this book I really felt as though making my first flutes was a real possibility. I am already seeing success on early attempts and only expect improvement.

I bought this for my husband at Christmas because he became interested in the Native American Flute. So rather then buy a flute, he chose to make his own which turned out beautiful. Excellent book that I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of its kind!, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Flute Shop: A Guide to Crafting the Native American Style Flute (Plastic Comb)
I have been making Native American style flutes for 15 years, and I'm frequently asked for advice by beginning makers. I always recommend this book. It provides simple, easy to follow instructions which will result in a very playable flute if they are following carefully. There are other references which delve more deeply into theory and history of the flute, but this is the Betty Crocker Cookbook of the flute world.
