An excellent album...,

This review is from: Flutistry (Audio CD)
If you know the work of Henry Threadgill and if you like it, you will love this album : his main composing technics are used here in the context of a flute quartet, in a kind of "third stream" renovated style. The first song is a sort of incredible baroque counterpoint with the strange threadgill harmonies : I've never heard so good and crazy composition in this style. The compositions of James Newton are less exuberant, with japanese influence sometimes (he certainly studied Takemitsu...) and kind of zen ambient. It's possible to hear too south american influences, but completly transfigurated...The main interest is, so, in the originality and atmospher of this album. Personaly, I'm usually not very attracted by the mix of contemporary music and jazz, because of the lack of spontaneous improvisated playing these kind of structures determine, but this Flutistry is something incredible, much more better than all what I heard before in this conception. So, all what you need to do is to get it as quick as you can... (and sorry for my english, wich is not my tongue language...)
