The pre-filter sponge is useful when you are breeding small shrimp and fish, as this will stop them from being sucked into your filter.

This is the best deal that I have seen on these pre-filters.

A lot of people make homemade prefilters, but many of them just look like crap. The Fluval Edge looks great, fits perfectly, does the job well, and is only about $3 or so, depending who you buy it from.

UPDATE: I am not using this prefilter in my main tank anymore. It is great for a fry tank or a shrimp tank where you don't want them to be sucked into the intake, but it just reduces suction and flow too much. Large debris particles were not being removed from the water. I am now using some mesh from a media bag, secured with some rubber bands, which improves flow and will still keep even my small Tetras from being sucked up.

UPDATE: I have been using these Fluval pre-filters for the past few years now, and
they really are quite useful in easing the load on an aquarium filter's mechanical filtration.

I have these pre-filters on most of my planted aquaria, and I clean them once a week, since the flow is noticeably slower by that time.

The fact that the water flow in an aquarium filter can be down to a trickle within a week's time, after installing one of these pre-filters on its intake, should give the reader an idea of their superb filtering ability.

These filters are also available on Amazon.com in 3 packs for about $4.88, including shipping. This is the best deal that I have seen on these pre-filters.

The reader should also find of interest that while these pre-filters are sold for the Aquaclear 20 filters on the Fluval 6 & 12 gallon Edge aquariums, they can also be used on the intakes of most filters whose diameter is up to a half inch, since these pre-filters will stretch a bit.

The key is to clean them weekly so that they maintain good water flow. Until you have used a pre-filter, whether it's the Fluval or one from another aquarium filter manufacturer, you have no idea how beneficial these pre-filters are in easing the job of the mechanical filtration in your aquarium filter.

* Notation: In regard to Aquaclear filters, this author also uses an Aquaclear 50 and Aquaclear 70 as dedicated mechanical filters for fine filtering (water polishing) the water in my planted aquaria. I use the AC 50 on the small tanks and the AC 70 on the larger ones, and just move the filters from one tank to the next, after they have been micron filtered.

The pre-filter sponge is useful when you are breeding small shrimp and fish, as this will stop them from being sucked into your filter.

The foam flows very well as long as it is properly maintained. I find that I need to rinse out the foam because it collects a lot of fine particles especially after a water change where debris in the gravel gets kicked up into the water. I would not recommend this if you are not prepared to rinse out the sponge regularly

Having this sponge on helps keep the main filter pad from getting dirty as fast, and is simple to rinse. I enjoy the reduced costs/wastes associated with replacing a dirty filter pad

I bought this to use on the intake of a HOB filter but I found that the sponge was too fine and it slowed down the uptake. I've since taken this off, but I've found another use for it as media for beneficial bacteria to grow on. But the price was cheap, so I didn't mind too much.

Fits perfectly over the intake of a fluval aqua clear intake I also use one on the intake of my aqeon 20 hob filter in my shrimp tank protects the babies from being sucked in... its a little hard to clean I found its best if you put a cup in your tank so the sides of the cup surround the foam before i turn off the filter so all of the large particles fall in to the cup... great for shrimplets

I bought this for my Fluval edge aquarium when I had small fish in it. The sponge was hard to get on the intake tube and angled the tube slightly off but it was ok. It worked well for the most part. :)
