The reflective surface makes it blend in.

Heater is not fully submersible, though the packaging calls it "submersible" (misleading).

In addition the temperature dial seems to be much more accurate.

Don't be misled by the information on the packaging that says this heater should not be submersed completely. I called Fluval and was told that they were forced to put that in the instructions and on the unit for the sake of Canadian requirements. The unit is fully submersible and it keeps my aquarium at a more even temperature than any other heater I've purchased. In addition the temperature dial seems to be much more accurate. Good unit! Buy it!

This is a very nice heater. The reflective surface makes it blend in. It IS submersible and is about 12" long. Like all heaters, you have to tweak it to find out the precise setting .......... no problem. I recommend it.

First, I selected 2 days shipping through Amazon Prime and received this item exactly on time, in the afternoon of the second day. It was packaged in a box with bags of air. I appreciated that since this is a fragile product.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the box was that this heater is huge for the wattage. Mine is 50 watts, to be used in a 10 gallon aquarium, and it is almost exactly the same height as the aquarium itself. Then when I put it in the aquarium it became clear that the reflective surface of the heater serves only to make it MORE visible. It just looks like this gleaming shiny metal object in there, and doesn't really seem to actually reflect the colors surrounding it, but instead it reflects the aquarium light above. Because of this I decided to lay it against the bottom back of the aquarium so that it is obscured by plants, and the cord goes right up the seam of the aquarium where it isn't noticeable. If you're buying this for its subtlety, you'll be disappointed.

BUT, despite this, I am pleased with my purchase to far. It has been keeping my 10 gallon betta tank appropriately warm, within a degree of the setting and that's all I really care about. I was going to get a Hydor Theo but this was bit cheaper. It seems to perform just as well. Granted I have only had it for about a day and a half, but I will update my review if the performance changes.

In case anyone's wondering, the heater appears to be some sort of metal or metallic material encased in glass, so it is fragile like other glass heaters. It's not made of metal on the outside.

Finally, I wanted to dispel the myth that this heater is not fully submersible.

I've got a 35 gallon salt water tank, with a 2 gallon or so sump filtration system, so a total of 35-40 gallons. My last water heater for the tank was a 150 watt, I positioned it in the corner behind some coral to keep it out of sight, and it heated the water to 80 degrees easily, for 5 years.

When that burnt out, I purchased this heater. After reading the reviews, and seeing a lot of people having problems with the temperatures this unit can bring the water to, I decided to go for the 200 watt (supposed to be enough for a 60 gal tank), just to be sure there was PLEANTY of power to heat the tank properly.

Unfortunately, I've not been having much luck. Even at max setting of 86 deg, the tank was only getting heated to 75 degrees in a 70 degree room. I decided to move the heater to the back center of the tank with no obstructions, that helped a little bit, the tank is now at 79 degrees.

This is simply not going to work. I'm in Indianapolis and in the Winter, the room with the tank will get down to 60 degrees and I know that heater is not going to be able to warm the tank to 80 degrees.

What a drag, with Fall quickly trying to show it's chilly side, I now have to scramble to send this one back, wait for a refund and buy another one. I'd recommend you skip this product and select another one.

November 20 Update:
So, I replaced the heater I had received with another identical one, thinking that perhaps I just got a broken one, but unfortunately, this heater is even less effective than the last one. The max temperature the replacement heater is about 77 degrees even though I have it set to maximum of 86 degrees. Really, just stay away from this heater. Find another one.

I purchased two of these for my 110 gallon tank. They keep the temperature right where I need it. My main issue is that there is a "do not place below this line" and it is about 1" below the "do not allow water below this line". My tank evaporates 2 inches in a week... so if I didn't fully submerge it, it would overheat due to lack of water. I've hard it submerged now for a couple of months with no problem; however, it is concerning that there is a max water level on a submergable heater. It works great and is working fully submerged, but I gave it a 4 because I suspect this might void the warranty.

Really long! 12 inches long and 1 inch wide. Easy button on top displaying ideal water temperature for your fish. Temperature number display is easy to read on top of tube and the tube has 2 water wave graphics to let you know how deep to put it in water. The heater is used up to 65 gallon fish tanks! In my earlier experience with other heaters a long time ago "NEVER TURN ON HEATER OUT OF WATER! IT MIGHT EXPLODE" Internal acid might get on your skin severe pain.
