Its a very bright light and works really well.

Once again and for emphasis, don't tighten it to the point where it becomes so rigid that it places great stress on the plastic bracket itself.

I've got two of these lights, and they work great for a 10 gallon cube for growing low-medium light plants.

I've got two of these lights, and they work great for a 10 gallon cube for growing low-medium light plants. When these first came out in early 2011, the first batch had bulbs that burned out in a short period of time. This happened to me with my first one. I contacted Hagan (Fluval's parent company) and the shipped me a new bulb via 2-day FedEx after emailing them a copy of my receipt.

One very important note about these:
They will not fit a regular aquarium. They are designed to fit rimless tanks. So if you've got the typical black plastic rim around the top of your aquarium, find another light.

Also, the replacement bulbs are proprietary, so its a good idea to buy a replacement bulb ahead of time, rather than risk not being able to find a pet store that stocks the bulb when your burns out. If you search Google, you'll find instructions on how to modify a standard bulb to work with Fluval's proprietary connector, but to me it seemed easier to buy a new bulb than try to hack a standard one to fit.

This light is legit. i suspect the bad reviews about it going out quickly are due to getting it wet or maybe rare defects. I have one on my 8 gal tank and its great. I also know at least 4 other people who have had good experiences with this light. I think i will get another to double up on my plant-growing power.

The swivel feature makes it easy to move around for tank maintenance. But don't get it if you have a thick rim on the tank. its made for rimless, but if you are handy/crafty, I suppose you could make some mods to get it fitting.

I am growing java fern, java moss, Ludwigia repens, Elodea, Rotala Indica, dwarf red lily, and a marimo moss ball with this light.

Update: I did end up getting one more and have been double-rockin' for quite some time now. Both lights have preformed admirably. Plants doing well.

UPDATE: 6/18/14:

For those who purchase a Fluval CF 13, please remember not to tighten the lower black knob to the point where it becomes so rigid that it places great stress on the plastic bracket that attaches the CF 13 to the rim of your aquarium. That is how I managed to break two of these brackets.

Instead, I have learned not to over-tighten this black knob which gets threaded onto the Fluval plastic bracket for the CF 13.

You need to screw it on just enough so that it doesn't fall off into your tank.

A few full turns will do, which will still keep the knob flexible, thus allowing the Fluval CF 13 to rotate from left to right without placing undue stress on its plastic bracket.

Once again and for emphasis, don't tighten it to the point where it becomes so rigid that it places great stress on the plastic bracket itself.

These brackets should be better constructed than they are. However, given that we cannot purchase these brackets separately here in the USA, we might as well learn to make them last as long as we can.

As for the three screws which mount the plastic bracket to the side of your aquarium, these screws can be tightened by hand. There is no need to use a screwdriver to tighten them. Just turn them until they fit snugly. This will enable you to loosen them with ease if you need to remove the plastic bracket for some reason, such as cleaning the glass panes of your aquarium.

Moreover, if you have an old Fluval CF 13 whose bracket has broken, don't toss it. Instead, use it for spare parts.

You might find that that the new CF 13 light that you purchased stops working unexpectedly.

The lights have been working great for almost a year, no issues with that but the plastic bracket that holds the lights in place broke easily the first time I removed it (tightened the plastic screws). The clear plastic bracket that holds the light has seam lines that break when stressed (like trying to angle the light). I was able to hot glue mine back together but the next problem was the stupid plastic screws that hold the bracket in place! They are plastic and were stripped after only using twice. Now I will need to replace the screws (if I can find any the right size). I think Fluval chose plastic to avoid cracking the glass aquarium when you screw on the bracket but annoying things like this should be fixed. It's not easy to just go out and buy a different light because most other brands will interfere with a glass top. I prefer to keep the glass top on to prevent water and fish loss.
Same day update-Found the plastic bracket on a Fluval parts Canadian site but they wouldn't ship to the USA (1.99) and the same bracket was not available on Fluval USA site. Had to order an entire new light. It was about time to change the bulb anyway-just hate throwing away a perfectly good light because the stupid bracket broke. Oh well.
7/2/13 New light arrived, same bracket, etc. Passing along 1-800 number for others with problems or questions with this light 1-800-724-2436 (9-4 Eastern time)
