Stock up. Keep a large supply on hand. You will be replacing this media at least once per month, depending on your situation.

The Fluval U2 underwater/internal filter uses a total of five filter medias: 2 coarse foam, 2 poly/carbon pads, and 40 grams of ceramic bio-media. This is the one that you would need to replace frequently. The coarse foam can be rinsed out and re-used, being made of inert material. The ceramic bio-media can also be rinsed out, but should only be replaced if they are extremely dirty.
I do not know how ceramic bio-media can get dirty enough to the point that they will need to be thrown away, but I suppose it can happen. Here's a potential scenario, if you used copper to medicate the tank at some point in the past, and now you want to keep invertebrates, then yes, you will need to replace all of the media in your filter. Even the ones that are considered inert, since even a small trace of copper can harm your shrimp.

The Fluval U2 will run just fine without a poly/carbon pad installed. Set up as such, it will still function as a coarse mechanical filter and as a submerged biological filter. You just lose chemical filtration. This is an advantage to you during those times when you have to add medication to your tank.

How well does this filter pad do its job? It does a fine job of filtering out smaller particles. These are particles that are too small be captured by the coarse mechanical filter. However, it does a poor job of chemical filtration. This is not surprising, when you consider that this pad does not hold granular activated carbon. Instead, one side of the pad contains bonded carbon. There is very little actual carbon in the product. What you have is carbon bonded to the filter material.

I have purchased these dual pads before for use in my existing Fluval U2 filter, they do fit perfectly since they were designed solely for this filter model. Like many others, I have tried using other pads to save money but it simply isn't worth the time. These pads fit as advertised and work well, just be prepared to pay the extra money for the convenience.

While it has good filtering qualities, it does seem to get clogged quickly. It may be that I need to upgrade to the U3 filter. I am using this U2 filter in a 30 gallon fresh water tank with 10 fish in the semi-aggressive category. I do have live plants as well in this tank and a 5 watt UV light w/filter.

Everyone knows that carbon filtered water, such as water that has been put through a Brita filter, knows it is far higher quality in taste. I can assure that with the advantage of a carbon filter your pets will thank you in their own way for removing potentially harmful chemicals from your tank.

In the meantime, the Poly (Polyester) part of a Fluval U3 filtration system gets even smaller particles than the Foam.

It's a filter, it fits and it works. I just wish the secondary filter were not attached to the chemical filter pad (just carbon like most filters). I have a planted tank. Having two physical filters is useful to remove algae while supplying light/CO2 to plants but the carbon pad will remove nutrient that the plants would like. The filter a VERY difficult to wash/rinse and is easily worn out of you try and remove any algae from either side of the pad. The foam pad can just me squeezed (like a sponge) to the waste water during water changes to remove excess algae but not these darn pads. Thus I'm removing a star for a bad design issue for planted tanks. It's like to be able to clean both the sponge and pad but simply remove the carbon filter and you can not do so with the U series. If anyone knows how to remove or deactivate the charcoal side please leave a comment. After a couple of months I had to give up and replace the filthy filter that lasted trough initial cycling.

I use the U4 along with Fluval's hangon tank filter in a 55g for water turtles. They together keep the tank ok and cheaper right now than the FX I want. But this is short term solution and they filters are at opposite ends of tank to push together dirty water.
SO while this works, I wouldn't recommend others do it if they can afford the FX series for water turtles. This is best for fish, and haven't had any problems with my feeder fish getting into this filter.
*Change out only one side(there are 2) at a time to keep the good biological bacteria.

I've used several different filter systems on my various aquariums. I love this underwater one the most. No constant running water. It keeps the tank clean and the filter elements last a long time.

Works great to clear my tank but not really doing a great job with odo elimination even though it has activates charcoal in the package. But to be fair, my planted tank has a very tight fitting lid, which doesn't allow for much air transfer.
