4.0 out of 5 stars Life: Not What You'd Expect, January 12, 2005

I think it's safe to say that no matter what you are expecting, this is not it. That, perhaps, accounts for the mixed reviews. This is a game not quite like any other. The rules are simple and can be learned in a matter of seconds -- but they're not. Play ranges from fast to slow. Victory conditions range from impossible to trivial. And strategy can be important or irrelevant. This game will frustrate the 'serious' strategizing with its randomness; but it the careless player with too many beers in him will loose every time (unless he's just lucky).

You really have to experience it to fully understand, but perhaps this helps: Fluxx is really a simulation of life. The goals change constantly and seemingly at random, but often under the control of other players, and sometimes under your control. The means to achieve those goals are distributed randomly and totally unfairly. The rules for achieving those goals change constantly and without any rational. The pace goes from being impossibly slow to too fast to keep up. Sometimes, everybody just gives up. Mostly the game just ends suddenly with the last person you'd expect as the winner. And in the end, the best way to win is to set a goal that matches what you have, rather than the other way around.

(Stoner Fluxx is also a great game with identical rules but a different, more explicit theme.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and adults, November 13, 2004

This simple card game has one rule. Draw one, play one. That is of course until the rules change.

We purchased this game years ago as an alternative to the other card games that we were playing. Since then we have had hours of fun playing with our kids, their friends and even our adult friends. My husband always take a deck with him while on travel to play with collegues during downtimes at conferences.

The gameplay is relatively simple but since the rules, and object of the game, are constantly changing, it is more suited for older children and adults. A great way to have some old fashioned family fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Rules Keep Changing, June 14, 2006

This card game is aptly named. At the start of the game the rules are very simple: Draw One Card and Play One Card. Of course that also means there are no winning conditions. But as players play their cards, the rules begin to change.

There are several types of cards. First are the cards that change the rules. Just about everything can be changed from number of cards drawn, played, kept in hand, to winning conditions. Next there are cards that move things around such as swapping hands or taking cards from another player. Finally there are Keepers. These are cards played face up in front of a player that have pictures like Toaster, Rocket, or Peace. Combinations of keepers are the most common winning conditions.

Play is fast and fun as players try to change the rules to benefit themselves and not their opponents. Each game is different and can vary greatly in length although thirty minutes is pretty common. Because some rules force multiple discards, many cards will not be played during each hand thus creating a huge variance between games. The simple starting rules mean that it takes mere seconds to catch on. Fluxx also comes in several varieties including Stoner Fluxx, Family Fluxx and Eco-Fluxx that have slightly different rules and Keepers. Check it out.
