Life: Not What You'd Expect,

I think it's safe to say that no matter what you are expecting, this is not it. That, perhaps, accounts for the mixed reviews. This is a game not quite like any other. The rules are simple and can be learned in a matter of seconds -- but they're not. Play ranges from fast to slow. Victory conditions range from impossible to trivial. And strategy can be important or irrelevant. This game will frustrate the 'serious' strategizing with its randomness; but it the careless player with too many beers in him will loose every time (unless he's just lucky).
You really have to experience it to fully understand, but perhaps this helps: Fluxx is really a simulation of life. The goals change constantly and seemingly at random, but often under the control of other players, and sometimes under your control. The means to achieve those goals are distributed randomly and totally unfairly. The rules for achieving those goals change constantly and without any rational. The pace goes from being impossibly slow to too fast to keep up. Sometimes, everybody just gives up. Mostly the game just ends suddenly with the last person you'd expect as the winner. And in the end, the best way to win is to set a goal that matches what you have, rather than the other way around. (Stoner Fluxx is also a great game with identical rules but a different, more explicit theme.)

Great for kids and adults,

This simple card game has one rule. Draw one, play one. That is of course until the rules change.
We purchased this game years ago as an alternative to the other card games that we were playing. Since then we have had hours of fun playing with our kids, their friends and even our adult friends. My husband always take a deck with him while on travel to play with collegues during downtimes at conferences. The gameplay is relatively simple but since the rules, and object of the game, are constantly changing, it is more suited for older children and adults. A great way to have some old fashioned family fun.

The Rules Keep Changing,

This card game is aptly named. At the start of the game the rules are very simple: Draw One Card and Play One Card. Of course that also means there are no winning conditions. But as players play their cards, the rules begin to change.
There are several types of cards. First are the cards that change the rules. Just about everything can be changed from number of cards drawn, played, kept in hand, to winning conditions. Next there are cards that move things around such as swapping hands or taking cards from another player. Finally there are Keepers. These are cards played face up in front of a player that have pictures like Toaster, Rocket, or Peace. Combinations of keepers are the most common winning conditions. Play is fast and fun as players try to change the rules to benefit themselves and not their opponents. Each game is different and can vary greatly in length although thirty minutes is pretty common. Because some rules force multiple discards, many cards will not be played during each hand thus creating a huge variance between games. The simple starting rules mean that it takes mere seconds to catch on. Fluxx also comes in several varieties including Stoner Fluxx, Family Fluxx and Eco-Fluxx that have slightly different rules and Keepers. Check it out.

Great fun and easy to learn!,

Flux is pretty much that. The game rules change as you play. At the start the game there are no victory conditions, but as you draw and play cards you change the rules and victory condition.
While this sounds complex, it's no more difficult than playing something like 21 with normal cards. A group can be up and playing in a matter of minutes and the rulebook is only a few pages long. If you or your friends like games, but hate complex rules and long games this is the one for you! At times, the game can be quite random or require a lot of luck but its a lot of fun. Games can last a few hands or half an hour depending on the draws and how players play the game.

This game is so simple we couldn't believe it! Draw one, Play one...Then the rules change. My video game crazed children LOVE Fluxx. Now when their friends come over they ask to play Fluxx. What better review is that?? 9, 10 & 11 yrs olds ask to play cards instead of Playstation!! OH! I haven't seen any of the children get mad or frustrated when they lose either...the rules change so quick no one has time to get mad! ;-)

Just so everyone knows, there IS a diffrance in Fluxx and Fluxx 3.1. In my
opinion, Fluxx 3.1 is better, but I guess it depends on wether you played the original or the new vershion first. (Realy sorry, I can't spell.)

Draw a card. Play a card. That's Fluxx.
But there's so much more to it. See, Fluxx is a game of constantly changing rules. As the game goes on the "Draw a card, Play a card" format shifts constantly. Many cards alter the rules either allowing players to draw more cards, forcing them to play more cards, or limiting how many cards they can have. Every card played changes the focus, and makes it wildly unpredictable. But there's also strategy in Fluxx. Players can't predict what will happen, but they can formulate plans. They can stifle their opponents based on what they think will happen, and move toward their own goals. You can never tell who will win. In fact, when the game starts you don't even know what it takes to win. Easy to learn. Easy to play. Not to be taken too seriously, but still loads of fun.

I bought Fluxx a little over a year ago at a science store near me. I was a little sad to get the 2.0 deck because I liked some of the cards in the older deck better. But that's beside the point. 2.0 had the addition of a fun rule card "X=X+1" (which is mathematically impossible I think) but I really liked that card. Fluxx is a game that never gets boring, because the rules are always changing. If you are playing with a good group of friends you could play for hours, between the game play changing and the side conversations you won't even notice the time flying by. I mean come on, where else can you win a game by getting Milk and Cookies?

I good tell you about the rules, but they are always changing. I could tell you the goal of the game, but they change as well. I picked this game up 2 years ago and everyone that we introduce it to has to pick up their own copy. There is definately some strategy, but luck as well. Games have lasted from 5 minutes to about 30. One nice feature is that people can join the game after it is already started. A great game to travel with since anyone can play.
The game starts with the basic, draw one, play one- but is quickly modified with how many cards draw or play each turn, how many cards you can keep in your hand, and how many "keepers" you can have.

Just when you think you've got this game down, and you're doing good, and you're going to win... the rules change. I've played games that haved lasted anywhere from mere minutes to almost an hour. That's what makes it so fun and interesting, chance combined with the rules constantly changing mean that it's never the same scenario twice.
When I finally bought my own deck about a year ago, it was definately money well spent. I've been able to bring it out at random times, during 'game nights', and for all different types of people. And it never fails to entertain. |
