Editorial Reviews

Kevin has a strong link to the music of Journey and the band members, at one stage he fronted the band for a one-off show in 1993 (Aynsley Dunbar, Steve Smith, Gregg Rolie, Neil Schon, Ross Valory, Jon Cain, and Kevin), paying tribute to manager/industry legend Herbie Herbert. His music has always fit the same musical mold, so while this album comes as a surprise to many, I think Kevin will pay the best possible tribute to these songs. Journey frontman Jeff Scott Soto says of Kevin: "Chalfant is an amazing singer with an amazing range...looking forward to hearing it myself." A press statement released yesterday reads: "Kevin Chalfant is finalizing work on a new 13-track CD entitled Fly 2 Freedom. The CD is expected to be released in May of 2007 on Clique Records. The tracks on the new CD are all of his favorite Journey songs, as a tribute to the music that Kevin honors to be some of the finest works done by any Melodic Rock band, ever. Kevin states, "The musicians and songwriters of Journey are simply the best in the music industry." He adds, "The Journey love-laden sound has won the hearts of millions of fans world wide. I am proud to consider them personal friends and label them America's Finest Rock Band. Over the years, my fans have requested that I cover Journey's music. This CD was conceived to satisfy those fan requests."

5.0 out of 5 stars Kevin Chalfant and "Two Fires" perform "Journey" classics., August 21, 2011

This review is from: Fly 2 Freedom (MP3 Download)
Kevin Chalfant has been a part of the "Journey" family for over twenty five years, having left his mark on such Journey-side-projects as "The storm" and "The Vu". "Fly to Freedom" is Kevin's recording attempt at classic Journey songs-the selection of tracks draws mainly from the albums "Infinity", "Escape" and "Frontiers".

The line up performing on this covers album is the same that cut the latest "Two Fires" album "Burning Bright"(2010), featuring guitarist Michael Gardener, bassist Randy Hatzer, keyboardist Chuck Glacinto and drummer Timmi Higgins. Before playing the album you know that songs like "Don't stop believin'", "Separate ways", "Who's crying now" and "Faithfully" have to be there. On "Fly to freedom" Kevin seems to have chosen the slower material over the harder rocking tunes as from track 6 and onwards the tempo drops considerably.

Regardless of the above, "Fly to freedom" turned out to be a success as Kevin and co have managed to faithfully recreate "Journey"s music while adding a slight bit of their own in, which is quite an achievement considering that it is hard enough to recreate "Journey's" majesty let alone adding one's personal touch to it. The personal touch one speaks of is to be found mainly on the keyboards, drums and obviously vocals. The keyboards and drum sound substantially more `80s while Chalfant's unmistakable voice proves to be up for the job, delivering each of the 13 songs with comfort and charisma. Overall "Fly to Freedom" is a quality re-vision of "Journey" classics from a singer that has long served the AOR genre often crossing paths with the members of the iconic band. For fans of Chalfant, "Journey" and "The storm" this is worthwhile purchase.
