5.0 out of 5 stars Dante Thomas is ready to take flight and "Fly"

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have and should have been better
I was first attracted to this album by the alluring cd cover and photography. I listened to the song clips and the songs sounded like slick and sexy neo-soul, and the whole album is like that for the most part, but it's problem is that the songs are boring, listless, and fake-sexy. Dante's voice is smooth and seductive given the unexpectional material he sings with. Most...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dante Thomas is ready to take flight and "Fly", September 12, 2001
This review is from: Fly (Audio CD)
Quincy Jones once said in order to have a number one song you need a good melody combine with even better lyrics. Well, to take that a step further, you also need a good voice and Dante Thomas has a damn good one.
By looking at his album cover you would think Thomas was nothing but a pretty white boy with an album filled with cliche pop formulas and saturated melodies that is commonly found in today's highly populated pop market, but Thomas is no ordinary white boy. This kid can sang, not sing, but sang. With a voice that echoes Donny Hathaway and a soul that mirrors Stevie Wonder, Thomas is this year's new found talent.
Oh, did I mention his songs are also as innovative as his voice?
On his first single, "Miss California" Thomas squares off with Pras (who also produced the track) in a song that describes a woman who has everything, except a man. Thomas vocals evenly competes with the hip-hop soul beats making this song a true delight.
On the titled track, Thomas uses his vocals to convey life's many mishaps and how we should look pass our disgust and just fly. A truly beautiful track, which seems like the male equivolent to Indie.Arie's "Video".
The album's mid-tempo sound is more than welcomed. Tracks such as "Goodbye" and "Let it Be Love" standout as romantic and soulful, while the urban driven "She Says" and the bluesy "Money Can't Buy" comes off as private obsessions more than mainstream releases. But it is "Should Have Loved Her Then" where Thomas vocals truly amazes. Thomas sings "She used to whisper/To Me by the river/Alone when the nights were so cold" so soulfully that you wonder if Otis Redding or Marvin Gaye might not be smiling up in R&B heaven. His vocals are restraint and soft. You can almost hear the sadness in his voice reguarding the love he lost.
Thomas is simply amazing. Yeah, he's white, but unlike Nsync who seems to use saturated R&B vocals over mundane pop songs, Thomas truly is soulful. Hopefully his name will rise in the minds of many and his career can truly begin to fly.

5.0 out of 5 stars he is good or what?, November 30, 2001

i just can't wait to get his debut album and now i got it in my hand!
he is good or what? the whole album shows that he is going for R&B with a mixture of dance rhythm. the first single "miss california is definitely the charming one (u can see my review in the "miss california" single review) the title song "fly" just remind me of R.kelly's "i believe i can fly", if u liked that, u'll like this!
"money can't buy", a 6 minutes plus with a strong rhythm of electric gitar is really catch at the biginning, the plugging of the gitar is just awesome, somehow, may be the electric gitar part which drag the song for almost 3 minutes is kinda turn me off, otherwise.....but do enjoy this one, if 6 minutes is ok for u!haha!
another choon, "tina colada", is this a name? yeah u'r right, a very dancy rhythm, a ggod tune to dance to it but this song does not possess dante's strength - his vocal!
in this album, u'll find one or 2 ballads but do enjoy his vocal, he really has a good vocal, if u'r judging his vocal by his look, u'r wrong, he can really sing like the blacks did, put some trust in him and i'm sure he'll do well in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Job Dante Thomas, January 16, 2002
This review is from: Fly (Audio CD)
I didn't know who he was untill I went to the NSYNC concert acouple of years ago and I thought he was awesome. His song "Miss California" blew me away and I was pleased with the work he had done. I was very happy that NSYNC had chosen him to be one of their opening acts because they couldn't have picked a better one.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, November 22, 2004

This review is from: Fly (Audio CD)
I first heard Dante Thomas a few years ago. I bought the cd as soon as I found out who sang "Miss California," and I haven't regretted it since. I have over 300 cds, and I still listen to this one all the time. He has one of the best voices I've heard in a long time, and the songs are great. He has a very strong Stevie Wonder feel about him, especially on "Fly" and "Money Can't Buy." My favorite track is "I Should Have Loved Her Then," but I like them all. This is one of the only cds I've ever heard that I could listen to all the way through, without skipping any songs. I love it. If you love good soul music, buy this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dante has got all the R&B you want and more!, March 11, 2002
This review is from: Fly (Audio CD)
My friend liked the song "Fly" by him, so I wanted to check him out. I listened to "Miss California" and loved it. Then I listened to "Fly" and I knew right then that I needed this album and I needed it now! When I finally got it, I was so impressed with it. The CD has been in my CD player ever since I got it. Dante is really talented and has the beats to back him up while some stars only have one or the other. Here's my review:

1. Miss California - The first single off the CD and by far my favorite uptempo song on it. R&B beats, latin sounds, and and pinch of Pras equals this song getting a 10. 10/10

2. Goodbye - A sweet ballad, not exactly the strongest lryically but good enough you won't be skipping the song 7.5/10

3. Fly - This is worth your 15 bucks right here. This is like the 2002 version of Joe's "I Wanna Know". This song just soars! 10/10

4. Let It Be Love - The 3rd best song on the CD. A very mellow song. 9.5/10

5. Never Give Up - Great song with nice vocals. Has a soft touch to it. 8/10

6. She Says - Another favorite on the CD. Again, it has strong vocals but has even better beats than track 5. 9/10

7. Money Can't Buy - A change of sound but not exactly a welcome one. This song isn't too bad but if I wanted a rock song I wouldn't go and buy an R&B album. 5.5/10

8. Should Have Loved Her Then - Dante shows his soft side for a heart warming ballad. A very powerful song. 8/10

9. Tina Colada - The latin sounds make it return as fresh as ever. You'll always finding yourself singing or humming it to yourself. 9/10

10. Wait For Day - Ending strong is always important for a good album and Dante pulls it off. 8.5/10

It's nice to see guys like Dante burst into the scene and put out an incredible CD like this one. You will like Dante Thomas if you like any of the following: Joe, Craig David, Aaliyah, Usher, or Brian McKnight. If you love R&B and are looking for a new CD, this is by far the one for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fly-ing High!!!, August 16, 2011

Dante has a great voice. I heard his most recent stuff and really don't understand why he didn't take off more except for that he came in at the tail end of the pop market when he released "Fly". Still, it is an awesome, groove, CD. His voice is velvety smooth. Perfect SUMMER soundtrack selections.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have and should have been better, August 8, 2004
This review is from: Fly (Audio CD)
I was first attracted to this album by the alluring cd cover and photography. I listened to the song clips and the songs sounded like slick and sexy neo-soul, and the whole album is like that for the most part, but it's problem is that the songs are boring, listless, and fake-sexy. Dante's voice is smooth and seductive given the unexpectional material he sings with. Most of the sonds sound like the producers put no effort into offering something different or exicting and the results come off as sleepy and exhausted. And Maybe that's because none of the song's tempo reach above mid-tempo.

However, buried in the album are some promising and soulful R&B songs such as: She Says and Wait for Day. Which highlight Dante's talent and promise which was not displayed enough with this album. The albums even throws in a rock & roll and latino genre driven song which sound so out of place and don't even have R&B or Soul vibe mixed into them. It's a shame that Dante's attractive voice was wasted with such mediocre and bland songs. Overall, nothing but sleek style and no substance; and you can tell that a talent was missed. But it's still worth a listen, however I cannot give this anemic album anything more than 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as i Expected, June 14, 2002

Dante THomas is one of those urban white soul singers but much of the material that he sings is not up to par neither voacally nor musically. THe only good songs are FLY GOODBYE and MISS CALIFRONIA. Most of the other songs sound like some tired garbage from a decade ago but I can tell that with the right producers and music Dante can go far.
