5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible of bonefishing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more updating
Great information, especially on ambushing tactics and stats with feeding behaviour.
Very bad linking of pictures to text, due to oldfashioned buildup of document. This should really be revised. Nowadays you can easily place the info or name of a fly right next to a picture of it, now I have to go back and forth through the book to link picture & description...

This review is from: Fly Fishing for Bonefish (Hardcover)
This is the most complete guide to bonefishing written to date. For those of us who are addicted to fly fishing for bonefish, this book goes on every trip to the flats. There are a few more recently-written bonefishing books, with updated tackle and location descriptions, but Dick Brown's book is the most complete for learning what to expect on the flats--wading or in a boat. Great photos and drawings of different scenarios when fish are spotted, and tips on spotting fish in different wind, cloud, and temperature conditions. The book has brief descriptions of bonefishing destinations, the best times to go, and what to expect once you're there. There is also an interesting discussion of the bonefish's diet based on a recent scientific study of what bonefish eat. I've flipped through this book so many times, the pages are falling out. If you've ever been fly fishing for bonefish or you are considering going, get this book first.

This review is from: Fly Fishing for Bonefish (Hardcover)
This is an essential book for any person interested in Bonefish. It explains habitat, techniques and fishing areas clearly. Mr. Brown has a love of the sport and this clearly shows through in the text and photos. Highly Recommended !

4.0 out of 5 stars Good , but not the best!, May 21, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dick Brown's book is a real good one, but the best comprehensive text for the avid angler hunting bones is the one written by Chico and contributing author, Aaron Adams. Dick Brown's book is an excellent addition that also covers alot, but in less depth than Chico's book. Still a real valuble and worthwhile addition to your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, November 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Fly Fishing for Bonefish (Hardcover)
I am a fairly experienced fly tier. This book is admittedly not for beginners, it assumes proficiency. It is well thought out, well set out, has great analysis of flies and their qualities, terrific sections on types of material and their characteristics, just the info that fly tier wants (invaluable for those new to saltwater fly tying). This is an outstanding book

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, comprehensive book, September 11, 2003

This review is from: Fly Fishing for Bonefish (Hardcover)
I am a long time fisherman, but new at fly fishing for bonefish. This book has been wonderful for me to better understand what I am doing. This book tells you pretty much everything you need to know and much more. I enjoyed Brown's writing as well as the section in the back where world-renowned experts give their advice also. A must read for any bonefisherman.

bought this as a gift, he loved it. This author is well known and I basically bought this book because my father who is a very avid fisherman wanted it. He has loved it and it sounds like this author is well known in the fly fishing world. Great price of course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive book, June 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book covers absolutely everything to do with bonefishing. From (history) the first few fly caught fish to the very latest in gear, techniques, diet, behavior, scientific info, gear and of course, how to catch them and what to do when you hook one.

Great photography is just the cherry on top of a beutifully written book that I cannot put down. Just makes you want to go out and stare at the fly rod.

Good on ya Dick!

5.0 out of 5 stars says a lot and says it twice, April 8, 2010
By
pierre jean (montreal, Quebec Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I read it after Fly-fishing for bonefish by Chico Fernandez which is one the best book on fishing I have ever read.
This one is very interesting but I feel like everything is said at least twice which is a good teaching principle but as I already read all of this in Chico's it's a little too much!
I'm not completely dumb and I understood at the first time that I must not throw my fly directly on the bonefish's head or ... behind it. I don't need to read it 5 times! I'm sure that as a guide, Dick has said that thousand (even million) of times and he feels like he must repeat it "ad libitum". Or is it an attempt to create neuro linguistic programming's anchors to the next generation ?

at the same time it explores some of the themes that Chico don't even touch and some of them are very interesting particularly sighting fish or simply wading hazards

honestly it is a good book ( but I still prefer Chico's ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Dick Brown delivers again. EXCELLENT, March 23, 2010
Once again Dick Brown has written an authoritative and comprehensive book on fly fishing for bonefish. I bought his first book, Fly Fishing for Bonefish in 1993 when I first took up the sport. I learned a great deal by reading and then re-reading it. A few years later I bought his book, Bonefish Fly Patterns which I still use regularly. The format which includes a photograph, detailed materials list, tying instructions and anecdotes or history for each fly has never been equaled. This new and revised edition builds on his first book adding even more useful material. Everyone interested in pursuing bonefish on the flats will enjoy and learn from this book. Dick Brown is a bonefish expert, a master angler and a skillful writer. His clear text, sharp photographs and illustrations communicate the essential and the advanced aspects of gear selection, stalking, spotting, casting, catching and finally releasing what he regards as the ultimate flats quarry. Brown's enthusiasm and expertise light up every page.
