5.0 out of 5 stars Best published California information
Having read past Ken Hanley books on fly fishing, I have come to appreciate his wit and style. This book is very descriptive of each location including a map with highlighted areas, recommended types of flys and equipment for best results and any specific regulations, restrictions, etc.

Being tough to find good locations in Southern California, this is a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but oddly organized
Fly Fishing California does have a lot of good information for different areas in California. The ratings for different areas, recommendations for flies, seasons and other tips are quite useful. It is well written, and efficient with information but still manages to be entertaining. It's a pleasant book to pick up and thumb through and has some fantastic and inspiring...

This review is from: Fly Fishing California: A No Nonsense Guide to Top Waters (Paperback)
Fly Fishing California does have a lot of good information for different areas in California. The ratings for different areas, recommendations for flies, seasons and other tips are quite useful. It is well written, and efficient with information but still manages to be entertaining. It's a pleasant book to pick up and thumb through and has some fantastic and inspiring photographs.

My one major complaint about the book is that it's organized alphabetically rather than by region and there is no map to serve as an overview of where the different sites are. Either solution would have been a huge help in using this book. The first three spots are Alamitos bay (Los Angeles Area), American River (Sacramento Area), and Barrett Lake (San Diego Area), so it really jumps around the state. Each individual map has a picture of where the site is in the state, and there's a map at the end of the book to show the highway system for California, but if you're not already familiar with the locations, there's no way to find out what's in your area without looking through the book. It seems like it would have been an easy thing to include in the book which would have made it much more usable.

Aside from that though it's a handy book to get you started.

Pretty good book. No frills, good maps, nice pictures. Not bad for even some "coffee table" reading.
