Book Description

October 1, 2004
Coastal cutthroat trout populate nearly all of the streams and lakes along the Pacific Coast rainforest belt, from Northern California to Prince William Sound in Alaska. In this book, Les Johnson has written the definitive book on coastal cutthroat--from their habitat and life histories to the most productive flies, techniques, and tackle--always with a deep sense of responsibility towards the future of these great fish. Johnson's vast knowledge and love for this fish coupled with data contributed by biologists and academics from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia, make Fly-Fishing Coastal Cutthroat Trout the most in-depth book ever published on this feisty and tenacious trout.

5.0 out of 5 stars From their habitat and life histories, to the most productive flies, techniques and tackle to use when pursuing them, September 11, 2005
This review is from: Fly-Fishing for Coastal Cutthroat Trout: Flies, Techniques, Conservation (Paperback)
Also available in a hardcover format (1571883347, $45.00), Les Johnson's Fly-Fishing Coastal Cutthroat Trout is the definitive book on the coastal cutthroat, from their habitat and life histories, to the most productive flies, techniques and tackle to use when pursuing them. Coastal cutthroat trout populate nearly all of the streams and lakes along the Pacific Coast rainforest belt from Northern California to Alaska's Prince William Sound. With salmon and steelhead populations in decline, more and more anglers are turning their attention to the coastal cutthroat, and it's Les Johnson's vast knowledge and love for this fish, coupled with data contributed by biologists and academics from California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and British Columbia that make Fly-Fishing Coastal Cutthroat Trout the indispensable, highly recommended instructional guide for seeking to land this particularly feisty and tenacious trout!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Go-To Book on Coastal Cutthroat, June 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fly-Fishing for Coastal Cutthroat Trout: Flies, Techniques, Conservation (Paperback)
The author is perhaps the most knowledgeable person to ask when seeking information about coastal cutthroat trout. This book has it all, from how to catch them to habitat and conservation efforts. It isn't a technical treatise, rather a very understandable and easy to read work that will enhance any reader's knowledge and be entertaining at the same time.

I am intrigued by what others overlook. This book discussed a much ignored fish that is of great importance and a specific indicator of the overall health of our fishing industry in general. In 25 years of living in NorCal I have only hooked one cutthroat (not a hybrid). This book speaks of where and how to catch them. Habitat, feed, and habits. Good book for those less drawn to the stockers and size queens out there.

First Sentence:
It seems only fitting that the coastal cutthroat, with lineage dating back to the Pleistocene Epoch and considered to be a primitive trout, should be born in rivers that drain watersheds of the ancient rain forests of the Pacific Coast. Read the first page
