4.0 out of 5 stars Will save you years of trial & error on the S.Platte.
Very thorough treatment of hatches and seasons of the South Platte. Guide to effective flies is especially good. Sometimes difficult to follow which stretch of the river is being referred to. Could use an update in future additions as the river has been in a fair amount of flux in recent years.

The material is a bit dated. Can you say Two Forks dam~! I was greatly disappointed in the minimal discussion on the specific sections of the river. His discussion on the flies and such was quite good, but I really wanted something with a bit more depth talking about the various stretches and the different type of entomology.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superbly presented guide to trout fishing, February 3, 2001
This review is from: Fly Fishing the South Platte River (Paperback)
Roger Hill's Fly Fishing The South Platte River: An Angler's Guide is a superbly presented and comprehensive guide to trout fishing on the Colorado's South Platte River. The aspiring angler is treated to an informative discussion of mayflies, caddisflies, and midges that must be imitated to fish the waters successfully. The text is enhanced with recipes for more than a dozen flies with tying variations specific to the South Platte; tips on equipment, information on the unique nature of the South Platte, and illuminating photographs. Fly Fishing The South Platte River is a "must" for anyone wanting to enjoy the adventure and thrill of fly-fishing the South Platte.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great summary to get you started., March 15, 2011
By
This review is from: Fly Fishing the South Platte River (Paperback)
This book is a terriffic summary of the hatches, seasons, and techniques to use on the South Platte River. My main complaint is that there is not a single map anywhere in the book. Although it was published 20 years ago (1991), this book is still largely relevant to anyone wanting to try their hand at cracking the South Platte's code of tiny flies and big trout. I appreciate Roger Hill's desires to keep things as simple, yet functional as possible. When reading his book, you get the distinct feelong that he's a guy who knows how to catch fish and knows how to tie flies and these are the things he's interested in. He's not interested in developing the next great fly or making sure you know that he was the first one to ever tie an emerging, cripple, slow-witted, partially deaf midge. He's practical and I love that aspect of the book. I feel like I can actually use the information he's provided here and combined with Pat Dorsey's new book on Tailwater Flies, I learned a great deal about fishing the challenging South Platte river. I'm already planning my next trip there to try out some new things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide, February 11, 2003
This review is from: Fly Fishing the South Platte River (Paperback)
I found the book extremely informative. The reputation of the South Platte is that of a stream with very selective trout. This book saved me years of guesswork and research.
The files that are recommended are essential to success. The first time I visited the South Platte I was armed with the arsenal of size 24's and 26's files and went home after landing about a dozen fish. Thanks Roger!!
