5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, Awesome Author
First of all, I am primarily a largemouth bass fisherman who dabbles in salt water fishing. Given that, the information on fishing in this book helps me be a better all around fisherman. 3.0 out of 5 stars Fly Fishing For Striped Bass in the Northeast
To declare this book as the all knowing guide to striped bass is a little far fetched for me. I agree the book was informative and the photography was great. But nothing was covered about fishing situations like the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, fishing ocean stripers out of boats, or night fishing around docks and bridges. I think the title of this book should have been...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book, Awesome Author, January 30, 2012
This review is from: Fly Fishing for Striped Bass (Masters on the Fly series) (Hardcover)
First of all, I am primarily a largemouth bass fisherman who dabbles in salt water fishing. Given that, the information on fishing in this book helps me be a better all around fisherman. As for the author, Rich is an amazing man. I have had the good luck to be able to visit with him at fishing shows for many years now - the last five Fly Tying shows in Somerset NJ. Each year he spends time with my daughter and I showing us why flies work and how to make them better. This last weekend, Rich explained the impact of water depth on fly/lure colors and how and why fish see and sense colors and movement to my eight year old daughter and I. While explaining this admittedly scientific subject (rods, cones, eyes, lateral lines), Rich managed to hand tie a beautiful chartreuse streamer, autograph several copies of this book, show customer fly line leaders, and keep my daughter and I completely engaged in the subject. The book is artfully and scientifically done by a man who is not only a master of his craft, but a master TEACHER of his craft. We are fortunate that Rich shared his knowledge and I hope the Dean of the Midwestern University is able to grant Rich his honorary Ph.D.

"Fish porn" and "pictures of big trout" etc. are reviews of a book by an author with the last name Landon; the author of "fly fishing for striped bass" is Rich Murphy, and he is a scholar and an expert. I've read a variety of fishing books, fishing encyclopedias, etc., and I've been fishing for striped bass for the last 50 years, and this is by far the best written, best researched, and most useful book I've ever read on the subject. I'm a dean at a midwestern university, and I'm seriously trying to figure out if I can get this guy an honorary doctorate. It's a great book. And it does have great pictures--but it is not just another coffee-table book. It's a dissertation on Morone Saxatilis.

But nothing was covered about fishing situations like the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, fishing ocean stripers out of boats, or night fishing around docks and bridges. I think the title of this book should have been Fly Fishing For Striped Bass Off the Beach in Massachusetts. If you live up north and fish off the beach, this will be a great book for you. If you fish for stripers by any other means, don't expect this book to give you much information.

If you are looking for the be all end all book on chasing striped bass via the fly, this is it. Rich Murphy has packed anything and everything there is to know about the subject into an encyclopedic book of massive proportions. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn more about flyfishing for stripers. Both seasoned veterans and rookies to the game can learn from this masterpiece. Top shelf.

There are some fine books written about fly fishing for striped bass. This volume is the best. Murphy combines years of fishing experience with a great writing style and an in depth knowledge of striped bass and their marine habitat. As Rich Murphy is also a professional engineer with a technical knowledge of hydrology, he is able to write not only about the striped bass, but also the marine environment in an elucidating and factual way.

Additionally, the illustrations and photography in this book are fantastic. If you want to know about striped bass, their biology and environment, and how these determine effective strategies for fly-rodding for striped bass, this book is "one stop shopping". While the book has a New England emphasis, the knowledge contained will be useful for anglers over the entire range of the striper, as they will be able to understand the fish, their environment and effective fly-rodding strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Striper Fishing Bible, March 6, 2008

Hands down the best fishing "how to" book I've ever read and I've read many. This is a book you will read and re-read because there is so much information that its way too much to absorb in one or two passes. If you fish for stripers along the shore you need to read this book. If you fish offshore from a boat it will be helpful but if you poke around beaches, rocks, rivers or flats by foot or small boat you will become a better fisherman...the diagrams are worth the price of the book alone!

Though there are several very good books on this subject, this latest entry to the category is the most complete of any that I've read. The information is all there from migration routes, water temperatures and what they trigger, spawning habits, preying tactics, sensory stimuli, fish reviving, fly tying... the list is long. It is a very well written visually beautiful volume. There are tons of stunning full color photos. This book belongs in the hands of anyone who wants to catch (and release) a striped bass. Much to enjoy and learn, for the novice and the most expert fly fisherman.
