This review is from: Fly-Fishing for Trophy Trout: A Complete Guide for the Beginning Fly-Fisher (Paperback)
This book covers all of the basics in fly fishing for trout. The layout, graphics and photos are very well done. Then we get to the writing itself. I have never read a book on anything where there were so many grammar and spelling mistakes! Some sentences were nonsense as written. Didn't the author or the publisher do any editing or proofreading? The material is presented in a choppy, concise way, which becomes annoying very quickly. If you are looking for a readable book on fly fishing for trout anyone but this would be a better choice.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fly-Fishing for Trophy Trout: A Complete Guide for the Beginning Fly-Fisher (Paperback)
I was intrigued with Amazon's online description and recently purchased Fly-Fishing for Trophy Trout by Brent Curtice. The size of the book (88 pages) on first impression may seem small however the content is wide. The book promotes itself as "A Complete Guide for the Beginner Fly-Fisher" and does a great job at touching on an extensive range of fly fishing concepts. This book however is not just for the beginner; many sections go into adequate detail and depth to be of benefit to experienced anglers. Starting with Chapters 1-8 analysis of water, stream flow, and lake composition; Brent touches on many of the concepts an expert angler might forget or even take for granted when teaching a less experienced fly fisher. Those first 8 chapters are a great primer for any angler. Chapters 9-15 guide you though the types of trout and examination of behavior and feeding activities. These sections give the beginner a taste of the terminology and concepts behind the science of fishing. I liked that the book also touched on the problem of Whirling Disease. Be careful when you reach the sections on flies (chapters 16-18). This is where you can get "hooked" on fly tying. A would have voted for some additional color pages of flies however good fly fishing catalogs (print or online) are readily available. Chapters 19-26 spell out the basic concepts of fly rods, fly lines and accessories. These will be very useful to review before purchasing equipment (reading this section reminded me of when I was a boy; my Dad suggested purchasing a double-taper fly line which saved me from the mistake of buying a cheaper level line). The next section on fishing techniques (chapters 27-30) is when the practice begins. Brent touches on concepts of presenting the fly, methods of fly retrieval and landing your catch. The final section (chapters 31- 41) is pleasurable reading. The chapters on First Aid and Safety are always worthwhile reviewing. Brent did an excellent job authoring this fly fishing book; the concepts and techniques presented will provide anyone new to the sport a great start and what experienced angler couldn't benefit from a tip or two.
