Disappointing,
This review is from: On the Fly Guide to the Northern Rockies: A Traveler's Guide to the Greatest Flyfishing Destinations in Idaho, Montana & Northern Wyoming (On the Fly Guide To... (Wilderness Adventures Press)) (Paperback)
I purchased this book to help plan a fishing trip I will be taking later this summer. I hoped it would help me understand several streams I've never fished before in the area I will be visiting.
I found this guide to be VERY disappointing and not a good value at all. The narrative tends to be mostly a personal travelog -- too much story telling occurs and very little stream information or useful fishing guidance is provided. The author devotes too much time, and space, describing restaurants, lodging and retail establishments in the area of each stream -- information otherwise available, and more current, on the internet. While the volume does include some interesting stream maps, when I compare it to other fishing guides I've acquired over the years, this one ranks at the bottom in terms of usefulness to me when planning a trip to fish unfamiliar water. I also purchased "Flyfisher's Guide to Wyoming: Including Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, by Ken Retallic" at the same time through another vendor. It's much more comprehensive in its treatment of individual streams and provides substantial advice and guidance that I actually can, and will, use during my upcoming trip to the Rockies.

Don't visit the Rockies without this book,
This review is from: On the Fly Guide to the Northern Rockies: A Traveler's Guide to the Greatest Flyfishing Destinations in Idaho, Montana & Northern Wyoming (On the Fly Guide To... (Wilderness Adventures Press)) (Paperback)
I purchased this book shortly after it came out and have used it exclusively to find and fish new fly fishing destinations in Montana and Idaho. Since retiring, I have spent approximately 500 days fishing in these two states and have found the book invaluable. It provides exactly the type of information one needs to plan a trip....description and history of the river or lake, tips on flies to use, great river and lake maps, nearby fisheries, places to eat and lodging recommendations. All you have to do is rig up your rod and go try and catch the fish that reside in these great waters of the Rockies.
