Music of the Soul,
By
This review is from: Fly My Sadness (Audio CD)
This is the most intensely beautiful music I have EVER heard!"Fly, Fly My Sadness" is ther perfect name for this CD, even if you aren't sad when you decide to listen to it. I am a music junky, in both the aesthetic and spiritual senses. While I was expecting this CD to be a nice addition to my collection, I was in no way prepared for the intensity of the EMOTIONS it brought forth in me . . in spite of myself. This music reaches deep down inside, gripping that part of ourselves we tend to stuff away 99% of the time and pulling it quickly to the surface . . out into the fresh air and sunlight . . and pours a refreshing drink of pure water down our parched throats before standing us back down on our own feet. I quite literally sat here weeping while listening for the first time (and that's never happened to me before!). The entire CD is put together in such a way that, if one listens to it from beginning to end, one is gently lifted, then suddenly soaring high in the clouds, and gradually brought safely back to the ground again feeling renewed and reaffirmed. If you feel as though your spirit is broken and nearly dead, listen to this CD. If you think you have no imagination, no more sense of wonder and awe at the world around you, listen to this CD. If you want to feel closer to God/Nature, closer to your fellow human beings--or simply more closely intuned to yourself--listen to this CD. You will find yourself plugged back in. If you are in any way, ever, moved by beautiful music, do NOT overlook this unbelievable music!

A great blend of Tuvan and Bulgarian sounds,

Tuvan throat-singing is an amazing thing: the singer can make two notes at once, with a lower drone note and a higher melody produced from the overtones of the low note. But there's not a huge amount of variety in Tuvan music--my third Huun-Huur-Tu CD sounds very much like the first. So Huun-Huur-Tu members have tried various hybrid projects combining their sound with others. Unlike the mediocre Vershki da Koreshki (which merged Huun-Huur-Tu's Kaigal-ool Khovalyg with a Senegalese singer and two Russian jazz musicians), this one is a winner. The Angelite choir includes several singers who previously recorded as Mystere de Voix Bulgares; their sound is also other-worldly, but in a very different way that somehow meshes well with the Tuvans. Most of the CD consists solely of vocals, with occasional igil (a Tuvan two-stringed upright viola) and a couple of melodica passages by Mikhail Alperin, who conceived the project and wrote most of the music based on traditional pieces. The sound is intimate and moving. A second CD by the ensemble, "Mountain Tale", is nowhere near as compelling.

Breathtaking, fantastic, and almost as good as live,

I saw the Angelite choir, Huun-huur Tu, and the Moscow Arts Trio (with special guest Urna from Mongolia) perform in a small abbey in Luxemburg. I went because I love Huun-huur Tu, but I remembered the "Mystere des voix bulgares" record from when I was younger. The concert was utterly mesmerizing, intoxicating, invigorating, etc, etc. This CD gets close to that experience. If you can find it, the Zebra records release of the first three groups performing together is even better.

Magical Synthesis,

I've explored Tuvan throat-singing music a little. The technique is very striking, but most recordings don't hold up well to long or repeated listenings. There's not much variety. I have very little experience with choral music and have felt no special attraction to it. That said...
This CD is astonishing. It is quite rare to find it for sale. If you hear it, how could you ever sell it? The pairing of these 2 groups may or may not have been a more original or noble concept than the large number of forced-musical-culture marriages that flood the market now. No matter. This time, the marriage created something absolutely new and wonderful. The result is far greater than the sum of its parts. I cannot think of anything to compare it to. It feels ancient, hyper-modern, and rather alien - in the best possible way! Just find a way to hear it. You'll know what to do then.

After being audio intoxicated by the Bulgarian singer Angelite and the Ukrainian Hun Huur throat singers, I introduced this music to many friends, who were all amazed. Some enjoyed the music, and others said it would take time to get used to the style. I PERSONALLY LOVED IT > While listening to Fly, Fly Away My Sadness, I get the feeling of being in that region. My Grandfather having come from Bulgaria, it's a region I hope to visit someday. Fabulous stuff, fresh as an evening breeze on the Carpathian mountains.

Dissonant Marriage,
By
This review is from: Fly My Sadness (Audio CD)
It was the mid 80s when the voices of the Bulgarian acapella Women's Choir became widely available. I recall a reviewer extolling 'that wondrous sensation - nape hair rigid -' experienced through their voices as through Tim Buckley or Lisa gerrard, 'capable of inducing that daunting sensibility somewhere between sheer terror & total euphoria.' Well put Ivo Watts-Russell! The spell of that initial albumn remains undiminished, even as its successors attained similar qualities. Not surprisingly, given the compulsion for constant renewal, in 1992 we heard the Bulagrians 'pair'(if that's the word) with North African singer, Ray Lema in the thrilling,'L'Ensemble Pirin.' An even more awesome marriage was forged in 1995 with Milchail Alperin's,'Fly,Fly My Sadness.' Here, the Bulgarian Choir, now calling themselves,'Angelite' perform with the Tuvan ensemble of throat singers, Huun-Huur-Tu. Some readers may recall the engrossing & emotive doco, 'Genghis Blues', of American bluesman, Paul Pena's adventure into Tuva for a an appreticeship and song competition to great local acclaim. Anyway, if you need convincing about the sonic ecstasy caused between the Tuvan's tellurian rumblings & the statospheric heights of the women, pause for 7 minutes over track 3,'Wave'and let it hive around in your head.

Do not listen to this album in a careless or reckless manner,

I have over 400 CDs - if I could keep only one, this would be it. Every time I listen to this album, I am amazed. The combination of the heavenly sounds of Angelite and the power of Huun Huur Tu's throat singing is perfect. I can only offer these caveats: Do not operate heavy machinery or drive while listening to this CD. If you decide to listen to this album outside, secure yourself to a tree or other large object.

Simular to Huun Huur Tu's other albulms but I would still recommend adding "Fly my Sadness" to your music library.

I had the chance to see The Angelite live. Of'course one can't compare a live performance to a CD. Still the excitement is unmatchable-- The Bulgarian Voices blend the traditional Bulgarian folk songs into an easy-listening. It's nothing you've ever heard before. Unless you grew up in Bulgaria like myself. Still, I am as much objective and less subjective as possible. Try it! You'll love it.
