More About the Author

Erik Hildebrandt
Aviation Photographer and Author of FLY NAVY: Celebrating the First Century of Naval Aviation

Erik Hildebrandt is one of the nation's premier aviation photographers who continues to pioneer new technologies and revolutionary techniques to capture innovative aerial images. His 20-year career has earned him more than 200 hours in military jet aircraft ranging from civilian air shows to military tactical jets.

For the past two years, Hildebrandt has traveled the globe documenting the vast universe of modern naval aviation. He has flown with deployed forces over war-torn Afghanistan, through the tranquil skies over Hawaii with the Blue Angels and practically everywhere in between

FLY NAVY vividly captures the excitement, power, motion and beauty of naval aviation through remarkable photographs that tell the stories of each aircrew and aircraft as readers ride along on incredible real-life missions. The book showcases every aircraft currently flying for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard as well as essays and artwork from such iconic figures as Barrett Tillman, Sergei Sikorsky, Robert "Hoot" Gibson and Hank Caruso. FLY NAVY will be released in March 2011.

In addition to FLY NAVY, Hildebrandt has authored seven, world-class coffee table books on a variety of aviation subjects including the Front Row Center series that follows the American air show circuit and Anytime, Baby!, a historic volume chronicling the last six units ever to fly the U.S. Navy F-14 Tomcat.

Compelling Media Resource
Hildebrandt is an engaging and articulate resource for reporters, show hosts and bloggers. He transports audiences to the cockpit of some of the most elite naval aircraft with intense anecdotes from his experiences flying along with the naval aviation community world wide.

Hildebrandt was born and raised on Long Island, not far from where Grumman built the F-14 Tomcat. He describes his photography as an extension and expression of his life, from documenting his childhood exploits to creating fashion portfolios for models before ultimately realizing his dreams of aviation photography.

For more than 15 years, Hildebrandt has lived in a self-described state of total immersion in the world of aviation and aviation photography. He is a multi-engine rated private pilot and flies a 1968 Cessna
O-2A Skymaster that was formerly in service with the U.S. Air Force as a forward air control aircraft.

Hildebrandt graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton with a Bachelor of Arts in American History in 1989. He lives with his wife, Christine, and their two young boys in the rural countryside east of Minneapolis, Minn.

Would you like an adventure? Do you like aviation? Do you enjoy books with massive full-page pictures of warplanes? Were you involved in US Naval aviation in the past 100 years? This then, is the book for you. A large coffee-table sized(read sturdy), with Naval aircraft flying off the page at you. Hold the book to your ear and you can hear the engines. Just kidding! A real treat to have and not just read a book but experience it.

The Fly Navy book is for anyone interested in Aviation. If you go to an Air show and are in awe at what you see, you'll be amazed at the precision of the photos in this book. Every aspect of Naval Aviation (Navy/USMC/Coast Guard) is completely photographed by Erik. The testimonials by the heroes, abroad and at home, give an incite into the war fighter that you will not find in any other book of this kind. I've bought 9 so far and everyone who I've given a book to has absolutely loved it!

This is a hefty aviation photography book. Erik Hildebrandt truly shows the feel of "being there" photos. You will find the best aviation photography in this book. Some of them were made in a very difficult natural light available. Despite the jaw dropping photos, I still reluctant to give this book five star for some reasons. First; the layout design is poor. Body text is placed in widest column size, made it unpleasant to read. Second; Some photos are redundant. You can tell if they were taken in the same session, but in different angle. Third; Some photos shows obvious Photoshop blur effect. I can accept photo adjustment, such as saturation, white balance, or tone color. But not Photoshop manipulation. Four; Very small portion of F-14 Tomcat. Maybe because Erik is already released dedicated book of F-14. Final words: very pleasant book for military aviation enthusiast.

Just got my copy of FLY NAVY! and was absolutely blown away.

Hildebrant combines amazing photographic talent, personal experience, and an obvious love for the medium to create a piece that bestows a great honor on ever naval aviator, past and present. FLY NAVY! chronicles the past 100 years of naval aviation with amazing photographs and a very thoughtful approach to documenting the modern effort. The written pieces and first-hand accounts delve into personal experiences on the front line that serve as an effective back drop to the visual side. Every page has a different picture you'll never see anywhere else, from units deployed all over the world to efforts based right here at home. Hildebrant's ability to work veritable magic with his camera is impressive.

An absolute MUST OWN for any aviation or military enthusiast.

The leatherbound limited edition is truely an incredible product. As if the stunning photagraphy wasn't enough, the embedded narratives written by those with first-hand experience in the featured communities give validation to the feeling you get while reading this book that it is indeed a project born from within the very heart and soul of Naval Aviation. The level of cooperation necessary for something of this magnatitude to come together within two years is something I could not have appreciated prior to serving. A monumental accomplishment! Our traditions may be dying off, suffocating under the weight of politcal-correctness, but this book highlights what is truely important: The planes, the people, and the past.

Thanks Erik!

This book is a great coffee-table style book full of glossy images of Naval aircraft out doing their thing. It's a beautiful book to leaf through and just ogle the pictures, but the reader who can be troubled to read the prose will be duly rewarded with an intimate look at the entire width of the Naval Aviation Enterprise.

It's a perfect book for everyone for: pilots, wanna-be pilots, aspiring photographers, and anyone with an interest in flying. This book has been sitting in my office waiting room for a week and has become, by far, my most handled book out there.

Erik once again hits a home run with his newest book, "FLY NAVY: Celebrating the First Century of Naval Aviation". If your a fan of Naval Aviation and aviation photography this is the book for you. Erik creates some of the most amazing shots of Super Hornets, Legacy Hornets, Seahawks, Tomcats, and life in the Navy. Erik spent the last 2 years documenting and researching this momentus event and the fruits of it are reflected. This is also the year to go to a Navy airshow to possibly see the exact aircraft that Erik captured in his book.

Erik has done it again! Erik has been a huge fan of Naval Aviation and a big supporter. This book has amazing pictures that only the best photographer can get. Additionally, he has articles written by current senior Naval Officers telling their story. Well worth the price. If you support Naval Aviation, this book is a must-have!
