Bill Stinson has given readers an entertaning story within the practical pages of Fly Rod Steelhead. There are many stories in this book, actually, and each one, whether it be a rumination or an anecdote or a tale, gives greater insight into one of the greatest of freshwater gamefish.

Angling books that tie in an author's own story within the context of a "how to" guide seem to succeed more than impersonal technical essays. Stinson starts this book with his first youthful steelhead encounter, hooks the reader, then tells how he learned the secrets of the steelhead through trial and error and other anglers. This is one of the more literary fly fishing books out there, one along the "tight lines" of Sylvester Nemes. Fly Rod Steelhead is both a fine introduction to the steelhead and an interesting angler's personal fish story: a sure cure for mid-winter cabin fever.
