Book Description

July 1, 2002
  • First time in paperback
  • Complete guide for experienced and novice saltwater anglers

Anglers who have accepted the challenge of fly fishing the salt will find in Fly Rodding the Coast everything they need to know. In this complete guide to catching striped bass, bluefish, bonito, and little tunny on the fly, Ed Mitchell discusses the essentials of saltwater fly fishing: how to read the water, the weather, and the shoreline; how to fish from the beach or a boat; and how to find the best places to wet a line. The behavior and range of the quarry, the best ways to catch them, and details on how to land the fish prepare the angler for this type of fishing.

    Editorial Reviews

    Amazon.com Review

A striped bass tearing line off your reel as it streaks for the shoals might change your fishing habits forever. Then again, most fly-fishers will never experience such a thrill. The fact is, saltwater fly-fishing is intimidating to most freshwater anglers. In Fly Rodding the Coast, Ed Mitchell lays out the basics, and while his stomping grounds are primarily the northeast U.S., his instruction is useful for any coastal situation. A good portion of the book is about reading water; individual chapters cover tactics for beaches, rips, points, estuaries, and man-made structures. Mitchell also discusses saltwater fly patterns, weather conditions, and several species of Atlantic game fish popular with fly-fishers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost everything you need to know, November 23, 1998
    By A Customer
This review is from: Fly Rodding the Coast (Hardcover)
This book was perfect for me. It is directed at those in New England who already flyfish in fresh water who want to make the transition to salt, though it is useful to anyone who wants to flyfish in the salt. I haven't even finished it, but it keeps answering my questions before I ask them. I only wish I had read the casting section before my first day on the water -- it would have saved me a sore shoulder. The writing is superb and the illustrations are concise. My only gripe is that I like more photos, but I can deal with that.

Shows the where and whys of Northeast saltwater flyfishing.
Not a fly tying book, though flys are included, it educates
the reader on where to find fish, what to look for and how
to catch fish under different conditions. If you have
questions on this subject, this book is a good reference.
