I bought this with high expectations. Later while at radioshack saw the same toy for the same price. A couple days later I got this from amazon and used some nicad batteries i had sitting around. It flew a little ways away and then appeared to stop responding.
When it goes out of range it attempts to compensate by flapping its wings a little extra and the tail rotor stops functioning to make it fly straight (as if landing).
This happens at about 15 ft. Now me being six feet, this isn't far. The antenna was fully extended and the device was apparently fully discharged before charging it again to test each battery type. I bought the lithium batteries to make sure it wasn't something with the old batteries.
I charged the lithium batteries for and entire night and after work so about 9+8 hours of charge time. These batteries performed a little better but not a very useful range or near 50 yards (approximately 3 feet = 1 yard). Thats 120 feet short of 5 stars.
So I gave it what I could.
1 star for fun, it doesn't go far enough for flying. I can however fly it around on my tile floor doing some drifting which is pretty fun and the animals are scared of it.
4 stars for educational. Maybe I'll try to fix it.
4 stars for durable. It hit the concrete alot as it fell from 10 feet ish away. Seems to nose dive by default when not flapping.
Overall? 1. 150 feet...if I had that or even 50 feet I'd give it 5 starts. Should have bought it from radio shack to exchange it for another easier. Sadness.

The other guy who reviewed this item is an idiot. It's a $40 rc toy, what the heck do you expect? Forget about the flight range, it's not a problem at all unless you have completely unrealistic expectations which apparently some people do. It's a fun little toy that will provide entertainment for your kid. If you're an adult and are expecting to have fun with this then you have problems that can't be solved through amazon.

A kid's review (7 yr old boy) - with help from his mom, December 31, 2007

I bought this toy with my own money and I am VERY disappointed! It crashes constantly, I cannot turn at all, and it does not hover like I expected. In a 15' x 20' room, it hits the walls because it does not turn well. Each time I turn it, it crashes. Don't buy it! I liked the drangonfly RC helicopter better, but it is not very durable.
