This is a real gem of a book an a monument to the collective expertise and ingenuity of the unnamed tyers throughout the world who contributed to this project. Part of the attraction of fly-tying is the never ending pursuit of knowledge. If your like many people you spend time looking for books, videos and the like which will expand your horizons and develop your abilities. Most of the material we collect is devoted to recipes amd materials.

FLY-TYING TIPS is a book that supports your craft in a refreshing way. Over 500 tips that help fly tiers take more control of their craft.

In a time when the price of material can be a drain on your wallet, here is an inexpensive book that will give you ample ideas on how to control and expand your craft with cost effective ideas.

The fifteen chapters cover such topics as; your work station, materials and even on the water. A well defined glossary puts this book in the net.

Dick Stewart takes his twenty plus years experience and the ideas of fly tyers around the country and sets down in one book, ideas that will aid and inspire your interest. Novice and seasoned tyer will find numerous ideas to help develop their craft.

Written in plain language, this book will draw you back over and over again.

Inexpensive to own, helps control cost, easy to read, inspires interest . . . hook this one and enjoy the benefits.

4.0 out of 5 stars tips to take or leave, January 22, 2001

This review is from: Fly-Tying Tips & Reference Guide (Paperback)
Fly-Tying Tips & Reference Guide is a useful reference, providing tips on how to use unconventional materials in your fly tying. I bought it, and read it cover to cover fairly shortly thereafter. I found a lot of seemingly useful tips and ideas.

As a source of ideas, it's a good read. As a reference, it suffers a bit because the author organizes tips into only broad categories. Fortunately, it's not encyclopedic, so the tips are fairly easy to find again when you need them.

I think this book is probably most useful for beginning to novice fly tyers who are just finding their tying voice and seeking creative and cost-effective ways to improve their craft.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable help, January 5, 2012

This review is from: Fly-Tying Tips & Reference Guide (Paperback)
I have been tying flies for more than 40 years and have a large library of books on tying various types. This small book is worth its weight in gold! There are so many practical suggestions, clearly presented, that it is an ideal resource for continued learning. It lacks the great photos of other books, but the price and the variety of entries make it a great bargain.
