The Zucchero we all love is back!, November 22, 2006
The expected release of FLY in the US is finally here!
It has all the usual elements of Zucchero,no surprises here. The ever fascination with Louisiana and the Mississipi is present once again with the Gospel Choir and blues guitar riff in Let It Shine (Which is included as a bonus track in English as Shine)the other bonus track is the English version of Occhi (Flying Away). The rest of the tracks is sheer signature Zucchero. However , the track that caught my ear was Cuba Libre. This is no brainer, if you are a Rock'n'Roll fan you will clearly identify this song as a scrambled/reshuffled California Dreamer by The Pappas and the Mammas, flute and all. Again no surprises here, Zucchero has done this in the past. If you rememeber well, he took Clapton's Wonderful Tonight; sped the tempo up and came up with Wonderful World, he even had Clapton as guest guitarrist!
The hand of legendary producer Don Was is noticeable in the first track Bacco perbacco, very funky a la Zucchero. The rest of the album for our delight is the Zucchero we all love, soulful and heartfelt ballads of love, fidelity,Blues and Rock'n'Roll. An essential in every Zucchero fan's collection.

Of course...., August 28, 2009
There is absolutely no reason why Zucchero shouldn't be a big draw anywhere in the US except for our reluctance to accept anyone who doesn't fit some preconceived mold, or who didn't have their start in American culture. This man just has so much talent, and a voice that is smokey, mellow, and addicting, and yet he remains unable to break through the American market. It doesn't matter if he sings in English, Italian, or Spanish...for some bizarre reason, he is unknown here, except for those of us with excellent taste and a enough of a sense of adventure to take a chance. Our reward is in listening to this great talent.
I especially love "Quanti Anni Ho" (which I read he dedicated to his son, Blue), and "Amore È nell'Aria". I always start out with a favorite, and think the rest are ok, but by the time I have listened to any of his albums a few times, there is never a song I don't love. If you have never listened to him, take a risk and try this album. Or, if you are a fan, devour another great offering by one of the best international artist who is virtually unknown in our country.
This album gives a little of something for everyone. Because of the English offerings, maybe someone who doesn't know him will really listen to the quality of his voice, and give him the honor that is due him. I look forward to someday being able to see him in a sold out concert in the United States.
Addendum: I am a little disappointed that one of my favorites of his, "E di Grazia Plena" isn't included in the "English" version. Please check it out somewhere. It is beautiful.
