It's well-written too: My heart was pounding after the first 50 pages, and there's plenty of suspense and humor in the whole thing. A good Christmas present for the girls and young women in your life.
impulsive and quick-witted Jill Townsend, a high school sophomore living in the mountainous town of Big Bear, California. When her father dies leaving a grieving, incapacitated mother, Jill dreams of being in the sky while home bound taking care of her young sisters. Syd Blue knows her stuff; her experience as a pilot shines through every exciting minute of flight. I WAS up in the air with Jill, tense from cloud turbulence and gauge fluctuation. Each character shines in this engaging story of a girl who's not just following a road or path, but looking beyond boundaries to find her true passion, leading to lessons of integrity, trust and believing in herself.
It lived up to its promise! FlyGirl is a great young adult read. The main character, sixteen year old Jill Townsend, kept digging herself into a deeper and deeper hole, which made me cringe, laugh, and remember when that was me! I loved watching her grow beyond the naïve and angry, if well-meaning, girl she was at the start, into the beginnings of an admirable adult. The supporting characters were all unique, believable, and likable. And I loved the flying. Fly Girl is chock full of light aircraft, airports, hangers, and learning to fly. The writing was so believable that I could feel my stomach drop every time Jill left the ground.I could practically smell the glue and fuel!
For budding pilots, this book is a treat. For young adults in general, this book is something different, and a lot of fun. A well written work with romance, danger, and going for the dream against the odds... what more could you want?
Moreover, the value of the read far exceeds the price of the book. This is a go to for white elephant parties, gift exchanges, graduations, birthdays, bridal showers, baby showers, funerals, mother's day, father's day, grandparents day, every occasion deserving of inspiration and enlightenment.FlyGirl
Fly Girl is a fun read, loaded with facts about flying. Its also has a lot of detail about the local area (the author's home) - set in Big Bear Lake, in the mountains of Southern California. It's would be enjoyable for teens and adults, and especially anyone interested in flying. While the main character is a female, the story and themes are universal enough for the book to also appeal to boys.
Highly recommended read!
