Editorial Reviews

Influential and legendary German Krautrock/Jazzrock band formed around Hellmut Hattler, Jan Wolbrandt, Jan Friede and Johannes Pappert in 1967. Originally playing a hybrid of free jazz (influenced by the likes of Pharaoh Sanders and Frank Zappa) the members lived communally and worked on tightening up their sound, as well as other art projects, for close to five years before recording and releasing their jazz/psychedelic debut album under the name Kraan (meaning ‘faucet’ in Dutch). The balance of the 70s found Kraan constantly touring and releasing a string of highly acclaimed and eccentric jazz/funk/rock/improv/fusion albums, including their opus 1974 live album that became one of the most popular recordings in Germany at the time. Kraan records are never easy to pigeonhole, let alone describe and each is a masterwork, sounding unique unto itself. Following further albums and much gigging into the eighties, as well as a few personal changes, Kraan took a break in the 90s before reuniting and once again becoming an active and welcome vehicle in the live scene.

Originally released in 1978, Flyday is Kraan's follow-up to 1977's Wiederhoren and features a unique melange of melodic jazz rock with some Eastern elements intact. Flyday will be released in a stylish deluxe digipak, with bonus track and enhanced booklet with new liner notes and photos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kraan - 'Flyday' (Funfundvierzig) German import CD, August 31, 2004
This review is from: Flyday (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1978,it was the follow up to the band's 'Weiderhoren' lp.It's as good,if not better perhaps because drummer Udo Dahmen had joined up for the making of 'Flyday'.Unique melodic jazz rock with some oriental elements intact.Tunes that I dug the most were the seven-minute inventive "Ausflug",the power pop like "Gayu Gaya" and "You're Right".I can perhaps NOW understand as to why and how that Kraan turned out to be one of those top underground bands of the '70's.Check out the other Kraan reissues.

If you want to try out Kraan, which you should,do not start with this one.Tracks here are weaker than normal high standard, with exeption of first track Far West, which is only 2 30 min. long.
But if you are a Kraanut like myself, yes you got to have it .
I have loved Kraan for 25 years, and I do slip this one on a couple a times a year for old times sake.
Ok I heard this again the other day ,and it is better than 3 *s.
Last time I must have done the dishes during Ausflug which is a stellar track. There is more good stuff here besides the 2 trax I mentioned.Enjoy.
