Not having read the first book in this series - I picked up THE FLYER by Marjorie Jones as the storyline seemed different and interesting. My hunch proved correct!

THE FLYER tells the story of a young American woman who flees the society that has shunned her and escapes to the Australian wilderness to practice medicine. Dr. Helen Stanwood has just arrived in Port Hedand, Australia from San Francisco. She flees demons that have haunted her and all she wants is to have a quiet life practicing medicine and caring for people.

War veteran Paul Campbell is the local flyer and decorated war hero - he is taken to the Doctor's office to be treated from a bad croc wound. Instead of the old Dr. Mallory, it is Helen that treats Paul from his wounds.

As Paul flies Helen through the Australian Outback to treat local folks and the Aborigines, he starts falling in love with her. As he courts her - both feel the attraction - but Helen staunchly wards off his advances - she doesn't want involvement, no matter how attracted to Paul she is. Involvement and relationship means hurt and that is something she is not going through again.


A blend of Indiana Jones, Crocodile Dundee and Out of Africa - for the description of the beautiful Australian Outback as it is seen through their flights, this vividly narrated story will engross readers with a look at Post WW1 Australia. In an era where the settlers were spread across vast areas in the Outback, doctors required to be flown across the wilderness to provide desperately needed medical attention.

Their story unfolds beautifully. The decorated war hero gently woos the wounded American beauty. With tenderness and patience he provides the balm that Helen's tortured soul desperately needs and - low and behold!!! She can't help but fall in love with the sexy hunk of a guy!!

It is a beautiful and sexy love story - revolving around an unusual setting and time period - which makes the story so fabulous and different. If you crave "different" read this wonderful novel by Marjorie Jones. You will not be disappointed.

In Port Hedand, Australia, Great War Lighthorse Regiment veteran Paul Campbell, believing this is one of his duties, dives into the water to battle Bessie the killer croc. He wins the watery skirmish killing the rogue, but suffers a severe wound. His best friend Tim takes Paul to see Dr. Richard Mallory to tend to the croc's bite. Instead of Dr. Mallory, twenty-four years old Helen Stanwood answers their knock. She explains she is a doctor from San Francisco whose father is a friend of Dr. Mallory. Dr. Stanwood expertly stitches up the wound.

Paul courts Helen, who seems attracted to him, but rejects his advances. She is still suffering the burn of Reginald's rejection back in California. However, as Paul flies her all over the Outback to provide medical service to the needy and allows her to drive his motor car, they fall in love, but neither is ready to commit to the relationship demanded by such a strong emotion.

The sequel to the delightful historical THE LIGHT HORSEMAN, THE FLYER also soars as Marjorie Jones takes her audience back to post WWI Australia. The picturesque story line provides readers with a deep look at the Outback approximately in 1920 when medicine and doctors needed planes to reach the many spread out living there. The lead couple is a fine pairing of two likable protagonists who fear love and permanency. Historical romance readers will appreciate this fine early twentieth century tale of love between the expatriate American doctor and her war veteran pilot.

Dr. Helen Stanhope, recently graduated from medical school, has come to Australia to make a new life for herself. She'll be working as a doctor with a family friend, and traveling to outreaching parts of Australia to deliver medical care to those who can't get it anywhere else.

Helen's transportation during these times will come via a bi-plane, piloted by Paul Campbell. Paul came home to Australia after the Great War, using his skills as a pilot to help supply the people with supplies.

Paul and Helen have an instant attraction, but Helen fights the feelings because of things that have happened in her past. When Paul finds out, will he continue to love her, or fly away?

The Flyer is set during a time period that is fascinating to me, after the First World War, during the 1920s. Helen is a modern woman for her time, wearing skirts that show her ankles and bobbing her hair. She was a strong character, who made uncertain choices in her life and is trying to figure out where to go next.

Paul, in my opinion, is just to-die-for, rugged and handsome and willing to stick by his woman, no matter what. He was a major part of what I enjoyed this book. The other would be Ms. Jones' description of Australia, and it's people and creatures. All of this combined together makes The Flyer an interesting historical that lovers of romance will enjoy.
