The Flyfisher s Guide to Northern California covers all of the major fishing waters in the state. Each water is written by an expert flyfisher, who knows the water. The Fall River (Andy Burk): Hat Creek and Pit River (Dick Galland): Hot Creek (Dan Gracia): Yuba and Feather Rivers (Ralph Wood): Truckee Frank Pisciotta): East Carson (Jim Crouse): Lower Owens and East Walker (Kate and Bill Howe): Lower Sacramento (Chip O Brien): Upper Sacramento (Duane Mileman): McCloud River (Frank Holminski): and the Trinity River (Herb Burton). Each expert covers tactics and the best times to fish the water, along with recommended flies and hatch charts. There are over 40 detailed maps of the rivers with river miles and public access points. There is a section on the private waters that have trophy trout and are available for a daily rod fee. Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Famed for its finicky trout and spirited (but rapidly disappearing) steelhead, Northern California is an angler's paradise. Acclaimed fishing author Seth Norman, (The Meanderings of a Fly Fisherman) tours these diverse waters, from the Owens Valley to the Oregon border, and comes up with a very practical and wise guide. Rivers like the Sacramento, Fall, Pit, and Hat Creek are covered with detailed descriptions of access, tackle considerations, and personal observations. And like other volumes in the Wilderness Adventures Press series, there's a full creel of angling tips, hatch charts, and seasonal regulations, along with helpful listings of local accommodations and restaurants.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, July 7, 2000
This review is from: Flyfisher's Guide to Northern California (Flyfisher's Guides) (Paperback)
This book is fine if you want to go to one of the 6 or 8 most famous trout streams in CA, but if you want to try one of the several thousand other places to fish, it has nothing. A much more complete reference is "California Fishing" by Tom Stienstra. While it isn't fly-fishing specific, it is a much more comprehensive book, and rates places based not only on the fishing, but on camping spots, number of people, and scenic beauty, which are at least as important as the fishing, in my opinion. Stienstra's book also includes detailed maps and directions to the places it reviews.

Ditch this book and pick up Tom Stienstra's instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good reference for the major areas of Northern CA, March 2, 1999

This review is from: Flyfisher's Guide to Northern California (Flyfisher's Guides) (Paperback)
This book is a collection of writings from different authors who have an intimate knowledge of the rivers they write about. The book is very well organized - giving you maps, tactics, and lodging information. If you are new to Fly Fishing or new to Northern California this book is a must.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing a few things (Like where these streams are located)!, May 26, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Flyfisher's Guide to Northern California (Flyfisher's Guides) (Paperback)
I picked this book up for some locations of good fly fishing areas nearby (I lived in Northern California at the time). Not having lived there very long, I was not familiar with the specific rivers and their even general locations on a state map of California (and given that these are supposed to be big fishing areas and I fancy myself as being geographically literate - shame on me!). The editor has not deemed fit to include a well marked overall map of the area that leads one to the specific rivers detailed in the book -- you are assumed to know where the areas are and how to get there already, I suppose, or if there is some rhyme or reason for locating these streams on the big map, it was not obvious to me.

From the text perhaps even a passing familiarity with the rivers in question themselves is assumed - though it will definitely be useable once I figure out where these waterways might be!

To be fair it does appear that there is good information to be had, but the location of the rivers in questions on a map of the state is not obvious to me, and I found it frustrating having to spend an hour or more trying to locate where some of these places were or might be. Note that there *is* a large scale map in the front -- just begging for the locations detailed in the book to be clearly indicated (numbered, or other points indicated somehow) -- how about having it done that way in a new edition?

I will have to get a map or a different book to take advantage of this one, so if you don't alerady know the locations of these waterways - you have been warned! I didn't and feel like I wasted my money.

Check this book out very carefully before buying it or you may be like me - seeing all kinds of great fishing areas and having NO IDEA where they are located!
