Book Description

October 18, 2010

On June 10, 1935, Dorse Lanpher was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. After he was resuscitated by the doctor, Dorse began living a meaningful life ruled by his vivid imagination, artistic talent, and passion for creating unforgettable special effects environments for the animated characters.

In his memoir, Dorse shares a revealing glimpse into his fascinating life as an artist in the animated film industry. He begins by offering entertaining childhood anecdotes that describe cherished moments like skinny-dipping with his friends, saving his money and buying his family their first television, and constructing a homemade golf course in a field of wild grass. After he graduated from high school in California and entered the Art Center School of Los Angeles, Dorse's talent was recognized by his teachers; after five challenging semesters, however, he left the school. As Dorse embarked on a journey to conquer a new world with nothing but a portfolio of his best art and a desire to live his dream, he soon discovered that, with a little tenacity, he could do anything.

Dorse's captivating story proves that following one's passion is never free from struggle, but staying true to a dream can lead to a life fulfilled.

This is an ungarded and very sincere view of the work done on some very important animated feature films. Dorse's prose is sincere and easy to read. Please enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sparks Will Fly as Dorse Emerges from the Shadows, November 13, 2010
Dorse Lanpher is one of those heretofore anonymous Walt Disney artists who made possible the beautiful cartoon movies we all grew up watching. A gifted storyteller, It's great to see he has put the story of his career in a memoir. We've all seen many works about celebrity cartoonists and directors. But this the view from an area rarely seen, the 2D animation effects department. Dorse was the dean of effects at the Disney Studio during the Great Disney Animation Renaissance 1988-2003, and a mainstay of the Don Bluth Studio. His insight gives the reader a unique view of what it was like to draw your way through such classics as The Secret of Nimh, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Little Mermaid. This is a great read for anyone interested in the films of that era and the professional animation industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun story, October 27, 2010
By
This is wonderful book for all young people who are entering the animation industry or presently employed in it. Dorse tells stories of how the studios were when you had the opportunity to learn the craft of Animation from the accomplished professionals in that field. The studios were small so you had the opportunity to personally know everyone from the President of the company to the receptionist, it was like belonging to an extended family of close friends.
Dorse had the good fortune to also be chosen to work with and mentor animators in other countries that helped to complete the various animated movies.
There are interesting pictures through out the book. Photos that allow one to see what the studios were like during the last 50 years.
It is a treasure of stories for all to read and enjoy, certainly a must for young animators.
