This review is from: Flying with Arthur Godfrey Deluxe Edition Featuring TWA Letter to a Pilot (DVD)
I bought this DVD for my husbands birthday a couple of weeks ago. I'd never heard of Arthur Godfrey myself, but he certainly has some impressive achievements behind him. It was great watching the old footage of him flying that Connie for Eastern Airlines. He is obviously very comfortable in front of a camera (I didn't know he had a career other than pilot until I researched him later)
The old film gets a bit "stagey" at times and some of the other supporting crew look uncomfortable as they mumble their lines hesitantly (they look nervous interacting with Mr Godfrey!) From what I read afterwards, they were correct in being deferential; I hear he had quite the temper.
I wish the film had been cleaned up quite a bit more. Sure, I'm used to seeing scratches and jumps and voices out of synch on these old films and I understand it would probably have been too much of an investment for too little return to give this the full treatment. Still I enjoyed the DVD.
As a private pilot myself, I'm always fascinated by the business end of an aircraft and I thoroughly enjoyed the (albeit truncated) check list runthrough on the Connie. Sill watching the rest of the DVD. Will update this review when I've seen all the features. Recommended.
