Fresh and lively history wrapped in a digestible narrative,
By Casey Wicks "Thirst for knowledge, Hunger for... (Your guess is as good as mine.) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Flying Dutchmen (Paperback)
Honestly, I never would have read a book that had anything to do with the Civil War unless a friend had recommended it to me. My preconceived notion of such things is that the Civil War was the most suicidal conflict in American history, and as such, any literature on the subject has been either steeped in political agenda (a little late at this point?), or written with such a dry adherence to the cold facts that the read feels like an attempt to strip the paint off of the North Pole... with my tongue. Andrew Suhrer's novel artfully walks the line between these hazards and avoids such pitfalls in the form of a gripping and fast-moving plot that makes for both an entertaining read and a sharp look at a very meaningful part of America's greatest crisis. As an experienced and critical reader, I can say with confidence that Mr.Suhrer understands the structure of a well-told tale. The Flying Dutchmen is a robust taste of this author's ability to entertain and inform that displays his potential as one of the noteworthy fiction writers available to the English speaking reader. His is a production worth following.

Fantastic read,
This review is from: The Flying Dutchmen (Paperback)
This book is a thrilling ride detailing the life and times of a man charged with fighting a war for a country that does not completely trust his unit but he overcomes and finds success. Written with historical detail and a dash of humor this book is a wonderful read and book you can recommend to your friends.

A real page turner,
By Jeffrey L. Simon (Richmond, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Flying Dutchmen (Paperback)
"The Flying Dutchman" by Andrew B. Suhrer (Sur-a) is an historical Civil War Novel based on the real life experiences of the author's great-grandfather. It deals with issues of discrimination against recent immigrants- in this case Germans. The depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg is absolutely harrowing. Although it's the author's first effort I found it to be a real page turner. The historical research included after the story is quite fascinating as well. In this time of great interest in The Civil War this book illuminates a little known aspect of that time in a most entertaining way.

Very good book. It is historical novel but has the feel of non-fiction. It is an interesting slice of German-American history and of their place in the American Civil War. Very well written with an engaging style.

Dramatic and well researched,
This review is from: The Flying Dutchmen (Paperback)
The book provides an incredible trove of information on the 107th Ohio Volunteer Infantry that will appeal to the historian, however, it is Mr Suhrer's writing that makes this book exceptional. I found it impossible to put down. Romantic, humorous and tragic, with heart-pounding battle scenes. I hope he writes more soon.
