Book Description

1996
Flying On The Gages is a book on instrument flying. It is not a dry, boring instrument training manual, but a book of experience. Each chapter deals with a different phase of instrument flying, and there are tips, tricks, and techniques revealed that would take most instrument pilots many years to garner on their own. This book is ideal as a refresher or for new instrument pilots or students who want some information on how it is done in the real world of everyday flying. There is something for every instrument pilot in Flying On The Gages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"About half-way through my forty-plus years as a pilot, I discovered that instrument flying is not all cut and dried. There are lots of practicalities that don't show up in the literature, tips and techniques that are acquired only through experience. Brian Jacobson has written a book that's packed with solid, practical information, that you can put to good use on every instrument flight. It can make you a better IFR pilot...without waiting twenty years." -- Richard Taylor, Author of Instrument Flying

"Brian Jacobson dispenses lofty wisdom, speaks the truth, and in the end this special book is guaranteed to make you a better pilot." -- Rod Machado, Author, Speaker

"The instrument rating is a big, important step on the path to proficiency. In this book Flying On The Gages, Brian Jacobson reaches through years of experience as a professional pilot and aviation writer to extend a helping hand." -- Mark Lacagnina, Editor of Aviation Safety Magazine

"This book is loaded with helpful tidbits of information and it belongs on the bookshelf of every instrument pilot. Jacobson presents the material in a well organized and easily readable fashion." -- Howard J. Fried, Flying Magazine's Eye of the Examiner

From the Author

I wrote about many of my own experiences as well as those of others in Flying On The Gages. That's what makes the book so interesting. The instrument rating is the hardest of all to get, and the dry, boring training manuals don't help. This book will give you a leg up on your training or give you insights and information that you might not learn for years as you fly in the IFR system. Don't pass this book up. It will make you a better instrument pilot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent taste of instrument flying, October 13, 1999

This was the first book I read just after I got my private pilot license and before I started instrument training. It is way better than most if not all other books at giving you a taste of what instrument flying is like. It is not a dry, boring book to study, and if your immediate goal is to pass the written test, this is not the right book to get. But if you want to learn something and also be entertained, I highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ok info, but nothing new. Better editing would help., January 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Flying On The Gages (Paperback)
I was underwhelmed. The info was Ok, but nothing new was to be found. The format was awkward, with most paragraphs starting with a heading which was then also the first line.

There are better books around.
